"I told you he was friendly!" Ty Lee said, face full of furiously licking wolfdog. Neither Mai nor Azula seemed particularly impressed.
"You said the same thing about the badgercat," Mai said. "The one that bit you."
"And the mama turtleduck. And the mouserabbit," Azula said. "That's undignified, Ty Lee. Let it go. It's a dirty stray."
"No, no!" Ty Lee said, laughing at the animal's affection and then reaching around his neck. "He just got lost. He has a collar, see?"
There was a jingling of tags. Azula leaned forward a miniscule amount to read them, making sure that the dog wasn't going to turn and jump on her next.
"Dao Jin," she announced. "One of my father's generals. Clearly a foolish man who doesn't know how to take care of his animals properly."
Mai carefully neglected to mention that every pet that Azula had owned had died, some in suspicious circumstances.
"Great," she said. "He can come get it and we can find something better to do."
"Yes, exactly," Azula said. "Leave that beast, Ty Lee, we have plans to make."
"But he'll be lonely!" Ty Lee protested. The dog wagged his tail and barked as if in agreement.
"He's not smart enough to be lonely," Azula snapped. "Ty Lee!"
"Aww," Ty Lee said, getting reluctantly to her feet. The dog barked again and she patted him on the head. "Should we go tell your father's minister that he escaped?"
"It would be hard not to notice," Mai commented dryly.
Azula mumbled something about followers and turned to leave. After a few moments, Mai shrugged and began to follow. Ty Lee jogged a little to keep up. Predictably, the dog followed, seeming to consider it a game. He barked cheerfully. Azula walked faster, attempting to escape this indignity.
"Sssh, puppy," Ty Lee said in a stage whisper. "You can't come if you're going to be loud."
Mai expected Azula to say that it couldn't come at all, but apparently she considered it beneath her notice. They ended up in an empty gazebo, where Mai and Azula talked strategy (mostly Mai just nodded) and Ty Lee played with the dog.
Not so bad, for a summer day.
