Karluk had a serious crush on the next door neighbor.
Her name was Amira and he saw her waiting at the bus stop every day for the high school bus. She was always laughing, bangles glinting in the early sunlight, and he watched her when he could, long pauses at the window before his mother reminded him that he had school and she had work, so he really could quit daydreaming.
His mother was always fondly exasperated at how much time Karluk spent with his head in the clouds, but she never complained too much. His grades were exemplary and he was way ahead of his classmates in math. He was content, mostly, to pal around with his cousins and dream about things.
He wondered if he'd ever have the courage to talk to Amira. He wondered if she had a boyfriend already. If she wouldn't take him seriously because he was twelve and she was sixteen.
One of these days, he was going to ask.
