Title: for a girl
Fandom: Avatar
Length: 401 words

Excerpt: "I guess you're not bad, for a girl," Toph comments as he flops down and begins to examine the dirty crevices of his feet.
"I guess you're not bad, for a girl," Toph comments as he flops down and begins to examine the dirty crevices of his feet. Sokka thinks for a moment that Toph is actually rubbing in the stray dirt, and her nose wrinkles.
"I'm just as useful as Katara!" she protests. "You need someone smart to plan attacks."
"We need someone who can fight back," Toph comments, his expression unchanged. "Maybe if you practiced with that boomerang instead of just carrying it around, then you'd be useful."
Sokka's fingers twitch on the edge of her bag. Her father gave her the weapon like a token, something for her to keep until he came back. She's tried throwing it a little, but without someone to train her, she isn't very good.
Toph sighs. He lifts his hand as if asking for Sokka to help him up, but when Sokka takes his grip, he pulls her down beside him. Sokka squeaks as she tumbles into the dust. Very warrior-like, she thinks, scowling at herself.
"I know some hand-to-hand stuff," Toph says, wiping his hand absently on the ground, and Sokka stares at the gesture, trying not to be offended. "If you promise not to scream too much, I'll teach you."
"You just want someone else to call you Sifu Toph," Sokka answers after a moment. Toph grins.
"It has a nice ring to it," he agrees, and then he's got Sokka's arm again, and he pulls her up to stand beside him somehow. Even though he's shorter and should weight less, his grip is unhesitating and firm.
"Fine," Sokka answers, trying to sound snippy, but she can't really hide her pleased face. She likes being the brains of this operation, she really does, and there's no one better qualified, but it would be really nice not to have to hide when Azula and his cronies showed up, or any one of the many other people who wanted Aang dead.
"That's, 'Fine, Sifu Toph,'" Toph says, deadpan, and he thumps Sokka on the shoulder to solidify their agreement. Sokka's arm goes numb. She gestures weakly with the other hand.
"Yes, Sifu Toph," she answers, because there's little arguing with him when he gets like this, and she chalks up the small flush on his face to the heat.
