When Mike paused in the middle of their anniversary dinner to climb down on one knee and offer Tina the contents of a black velvet box, Tina gasped.

"Mike!" she said, her voice squeaking high. Her immediate thought was that they were too young, way too young to be thinking about getting married, but then she laughed to herself. Mike was still there kneeling, and when the giggle escaped, he began to look nervous and worried. He thrusted the box in her direction a little more, as if he was concerned that she hadn't understood him. The people in the restaurant around them had paused in their conversations for the most part; everyone there was focused on them. Even the staff had stopped moving, heavy dishes or not.

Mike swallowed.

And the thing was, they were still young, but half of their friends were already married (and Quinn divorced) from relationships that had lasted years less than theirs had. The idea of marrying your high school sweetheart, the one you went to prom with, was pretty out of date by now, and Tina knew that she'd never expected them to last this long. But here they were, 24 years old and college graduates, with good jobs and a decent apartment, and she still felt like a kid with Mike, like they could walk back into the choir room and take their places with the Glee Club, and it would be perfect.

It was always perfect. Yeah, they fought sometimes and she'd never get along with Mike's mother, but they always came back together again in the end. They never went to bed angry. They knew where they wanted to move when they bought a house, and how many children they wanted to adopt. They knew each other, through and through.

"Yes!" Tina said, and Mike's hand was trembling nearly as much as hers when he slid the ring onto her finger. It was lovely, titanium with rubies, and perfectly her. He knew she wouldn't want an engagement ring just like everyone else's. She wasn't just like everyone else.

He pulled her to her feet and wrapped her in a hug, and everyone in the restaurant clapped. Tina leaned up to kiss him firmly.

"I can't believe we waited this long," she said, and she meant it.

Awww, this is beautiful, and I love the background implications. Sadly, I could definitely see that future for Quinn, although I hope she gets her head on straight before it gets to that point.

Heh, yeah, same. I like Quinn a lot but where she's been going lately... yeah.

Yeah. YES, QUINN, THE UNIVERSE IS INDEED TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. Although the disembodied yelling isn't the universe, it's me.
