Excerpt: "We could play a game. The handsome prince rescues the beautiful princess with a kiss." He buffed his nails on his shirt, clearly pleased with the idea.
"Eugene," Rapunzel whined, staring up at the ceiling and kicking her feet off the edge of the bed, "I'm bored."
This was such an uncharacteristic utterance that Eugene turned from the mirror, where he had been picking the remains of dinner out of his teeth. Dashingly.
"You spent eighteen years in a tower and now that you're out of it, you're bored?" he asked, disbelieving.
Rapunzel turned over on her stomach and propped her head up on her hands.
"Well, Mama and Papa told me to take a break from court today, and I've read most of the castle library, and the cook doesn't want me in the kitchen, and..." She sighed heavily. "Even Pascal is taking a nap."
"So I'm your last resort, huh?" Eugene answered, brushing an invisible thread from his shirt and trying not to look offended. Rapunzel was up and out of the bed in a moment, taking his hands firmly in hers. She squeezed.
"No, no, not at all! It's just -- you're really good at making things interesting," she answered, smiling and cocking her head to the side. He had to smile back. After a moment, he screwed his face up in thought. It didn't take him long to have a revelation.
"We could play a game. The handsome prince rescues the beautiful princess with a kiss." He buffed his nails on his shirt, clearly pleased with the idea.
"Games! Those were always hard to do with Mo -- with Gothel, she never wanted to play and Pascal was so small -- that's a perfect idea!" Rapunzel's eyes sparkled. She let go of his hands and spun around, assessing the room.
"This will make a good cape," she decided, picking up a sheet from the bed. She placed it around her shoulders. Eugene blinked.
"I get to be the prince!" Rapunzel declared. "Come here, Eugene, I'll find you some old clothes to wear."
There was a certain mischievous look in her eye that Eugene did not like. He waved his hands in defense.
"Whoa, whoa, I didn't mean --"
She pushed him down on the bed with a grin.
"Don't make me get the frying pan," she said.
Eugene gave in.
