[Glee] blithe and antic (Sunshine/Rachel)
Title: blithe and antic
Fandom: Glee
Length: 1183 words
Prompt:
glee_anon: Sunshine/Rachel - FORBIDDEN LOVE
Pairing: Sunshine/Rachel; mentions of Jesse/Rachel
Other: PG for sexual implications.
Excerpt: The first time that Rachel threw pebbles at Sunshine's window, Sunshine only let her in because she was afraid that Rachel was going to break the window, and it was easier to hide bruises than broken glass.
The first time that Rachel threw pebbles at Sunshine's window, Sunshine only let her in because she was afraid that Rachel was going to break the window, and it was easier to hide bruises than broken glass. She had been positive that Rachel had come here to beat her up for defecting to Vocal Adrenaline; her new club had been telling her horror stories all week about the things that Rachel had done last year to sabotage them, everything from seducing their lead (who defected back to Vocal Adrenaline glory, because of course) to throwing eggs at Andrea, who was a vegan (at the time; she'd since gone back to eating meat because she needed the energy). Sunshine hadn't been advertised as their new lead female vocalist because they wanted to retain the surprise factor for Sectionals, so New Directions were the only people who might have known. Rachel had to be here for dangerous purposes.
The thing was, after Rachel managed to drag herself through Sunshine's first floor bedroom window, she apologized about getting snow on Sunshine's carpet, and stood there looking at Sunshine like she wasn't quite sure why she was here. Sunshine smiled tentatively.
They had a sing-off. It was ten at night, but a Friday night, and Sunshine's mother had gone to bed two hours before, complaining of a headache and downing two sleeping pills. She wouldn't hear it if a truck hit the house, even though the combination of Rachel and Sunshine's voices together was pretty close.
Rachel chased and led and tried, desperately, to keep up with Sunshine's voice. Maybe it wasn't nice that Sunshine had "innocently" chosen one of the numbers that Vocal Adrenaline was going to sing for Regionals, but if there was one thing her new club had taught her, it was to bite and hold onto any lead you could find. She'd practiced this song so much she could sing it in her sleep. Even though Rachel hadn't, she kept up pretty well, if Sunshine was honest.
When the last note blew out, Rachel collapsed backwards onto Sunshine's bed, eyes sparkling and cheeks red.
"I needed that," she said.
"You came all the way over here to sing with me?" Sunshine asked in disbelief.
"Well, no, actually..."
Sunshine shrank back a little, judging the space between Rachel and her bedroom door in case she needed to run. Rachel seemed to be considering something. That was never a good sign.
Rachel sighed and mumbled something.
"What?" Sunshine asked.
"I was lonely," Rachel mumbled again, fingers picking at Sunshine's bedspread. "No one in New Directions can keep up with me vocally, and Finn isn't talking to me, and... they don't like me."
She glanced up at Sunshine and then away. "You were the only one who liked me from the start, and then I betrayed you. I'm ashamed of that. We could -- we could have been friends if I weren't so jealous."
Sunshine was feeling quite warm about Rachel now. What she was saying was entirely true, and furthermore, Sunshine had learned from the Adrenaline kids that admitting jealousy was just like giving in and admitting that you'd never be as good as the other person. It was weakness. And she was trained, now, to pounce on weakness.
"We could be friends now," she said, moving to sit next to Rachel on the bed, and grabbing her hand.
"Really? You really would?" Rachel smiled, and then her face fell. "But - no. No, I can't do this to my team. Not after what happened with Jesse. They'd never forgive me. They'd go kidnap Kurt from Dalton to replace me, if they had to." She sniffled.
"I'm not anything like Jesse," Sunshine said. She'd met him once, a cocky boy with really great hair and the hugest ego she'd ever seen. Sunshine knew it was better to use less hairspray and be more demure about your talents, so that people at least felt bad about stabbing you in the back.
"Yeah, you're really not," Rachel said, wiping at her eyes. Sunshine patted her shoulder.
They ended up making out. Sunshine was surprisingly handsy, which did remind Rachel of Jesse, but she found that she didn't really mind.
*
It became a weekly thing, whatever this was between them. Singing, second base (and on one memorable occasion, nearly third, before Rachel decided that she didn't want to make that commitment yet), and then Rachel was off again into the night in her dads' silver Volkswagen, disappearing like some sort of poorly-dressed Batman.
A week before Sectionals, Rachel entered Sunshine's room with a look of utter despair on her face. Sunshine provided a suitably forlorn gaze in exchange.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Us!" Rachel said, collapsing dramatically onto the bed and throwing an arm over her face. "I can't stand hiding our love anymore, Sunshine! You're all I think about. Last week I almost came in Glee when I hit that high note we practiced together."
So singing was the key to unzipping Rachel's skirt. Sunshine noted this.
"I want to tell them," Rachel continued. "I want to tell everyone."
She got up and grabbed Sunshine's hands. "You could come back," she said, eyes shining. "You could come back with me, and kiss me in front of everyone, and they'd know that we're happy."
It was a very convincing look, and Sunshine bit her lip. Jesse had escaped Rachel's clutches right before Regionals. Going back now would not be a very good idea. Sunshine couldn't let herself get sucked in any further than she already was. She really had become fond of Rachel, and it wasn't just because of her kissing skills. Rachel had a lot of heart, and a million ridiculous ideas, and she felt everything so much. To Rachel, life was a movie, and she was the main character.
And that thought helped Sunshine decide what to do. "I can't, Rachel," she said gravely. Rachel gasped.
"But I thought -- I thought --"
"I have a duty to Vocal Adrenaline," Sunshine said. She squeezed Rachel's hands. "I couldn't abandon them now. They'd never win without me."
"But they can't win! We're the underdog, we've been practicing, we have heart like Vocal Adrenaline never has. No offense intended," Rachel added hurriedly.
Sunshine stood up and let her hands slip down to Rachel's waist. "But they took care of me. My mom can stay in this country now. Legally. What if Dustin took that away from her? Where would we go?"
Rachel bit her lip, and then she sighed. She brushed a stray hair from Sunshine's face. "I understand," she said finally. "We're destined to be star-crossed lovers, at least for now."
Sunshine nodded. "Like Romeo and Juliet," she said.
"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?" Rachel asked sadly.
"Right here," Sunshine said, kissing Rachel's collarbone. She began to hum a ballad, but she let Rachel have the lead-in. An hour later, she had Rachel on the bed beneath her, sighing and crying out with that golden voice of hers, and Sunshine smiled.
You really could have the best of both worlds.
