[Tangled] horse nonsense (Maximus/OC)
Title: horse nonsense
Fandom: Tangled
Length: 787 words
Prompt: Maximus finds true love for
esotaria
Pairing: Rapunzel/Flynn, Maximus/OC horse
Other: Movie spoilers.
Excerpt: She ignored him, munching placidly on her hay or at one point, simply pressing herself into the far wall, as far away from him as possible. Maximus was confused and swiftly heartbroken. She was the prettiest horse he'd ever seen, but wouldn't give him the time of day. And here he knew he was the handsomest one in the stables. Their riders were soon to be mated, so why shouldn't they?
Not only had Rapunzel come home to the palace with a beau behind her, she'd also brought a lost palace horse. The horse's rider apologized profusely for losing him but found himself at a loss when Maximus continued to sneak off and disappear at a regular basis. He refused to let anyone ride him except for Rapunzel and Eugene, and that fact, combined with his regular escapes to try to see him, meant that he was decommissioned quite swiftly.
Normally an unrideable horse was put out to pasture, or met a more permanent fate, but Rapunzel simply wouldn't hear of anything of the sort, so he became her special horse. Her parents, bemused, asked if she'd rather not have a pony, but she was insistent on Maximus. And since he'd helped to save Eugene's life, perhaps it really wasn't so surprising.
The queen suspected it was a quiet joke of her husband's when newly-Prince Eugene was gifted with a beautiful white mare before the wedding. The king claimed that it was only appropriate that their horses be a matched pair. They did make an interesting duo, certainly; the mare was small and delicate where Maximus was broad and strong. Eugene made a confused face that swiftly segued into effusive thanks when his new wife looked at him wearing just a hint of a frown.
He named her Tenera, in joking contrast (the princely new education he was receiving included the study of Latin, and whereas Maximus meant large or great, Tenera meant small or delicate). They stabled her next to Maximus and he spent most of their time before the wedding ceremony trying to get to know her, poking his nose into her stall in a friendly, inquiring way.

Tenera would have nothing of it. When they were taken from their stalls to go to the ceremony, she ignored his cheery nickering and his proud prancing, refusing to admire his strong hooves and gleaming mane, which had been plaited with flowers for the occasion.
It wasn't until Maximus saw her with Eugene that he understood. She became like a puppy when she saw him, straining at her reins to come closer. Eugene laughed and patted her nose, letting her push him back with her head and feeding her a sugar cube.
Maximus growled. He ducked his head to look into one of Eugene's eyes, curling up his lip to show that he meant business. Eugene glanced over at Rapunzel in confusion; she shrugged and tried to soothe Maximus.
"Come on, we have to go tour the town," she whispered in his ear, springing up onto his back easily, despite her flowing gown. He was pleased and calmer when she mounted, noting that her flower crown matched his mane decorations. But he continued to give Tenera soulful, sad looks from the corner of his eyes, in hopes that one of them would work.
"I think Maximus has a crush!" Rapunzel called out above the cheering of the crowd. She gestured toward Eugene's horse. "Isn't it cute?"
"Only if he quits baring his teeth at me," Eugene answered, his tone lower than hers, "because those are some big teeth, and I really don't want to be on his bad side again."
Rapunzel laughed.
"He's lovesick," she said. She looked at him from underneath her eyelashes. "You know how it is."
"Who, me?" he said, and when her eyes darkened, he continued quickly. "Of course. Hang in there, buddy," he said to Maximus. "She isn't hitting you with frying pans, so you have one up on me already."
Maximus snorted. The only reason that Tenera wasn't doing that was because she didn't have thumbs.
"Give her time," Rapunzel counseled. "I'm sure you'll be getting along just fine by next week. You're a very sweet horse, after all."
"That sure felt like more than three days, didn't it?" Eugene said with a laugh.
"Three days can be half a lifetime," Rapunzel answered, giving him another one of those looks. The humans grew silent, just guiding their horses down the streets past the crowd. Tenera held her head high, but when they reached the palace again and Eugene and Rapunzel dismounted, she blew her mane out of her eyes and darted a sideways glance at Maximus.
Well, it was a start.

It's the queen who reached for him to join the group hug, kay. She's as kind as Rapunzel and doesn't carry a frying pan. (Mostly because she's too awesome to need one.)
THE KING AND QUEEN NEED NAMES.

But I bet she could be a total badass with a frying pan if need be.
THEY DO. WE SHOULD MAKE SOME UP.
