[Glee] minds are sunlike (Finn/Tina)
Title: minds are sunlike
Fandom: Glee
Length: 742 words
Prompt:
glee_anon: Finn/Tina, they wore costumes that went together
Pairing: Finn/Tina; Puck/Rachel & Artie/Tina mentioned
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "We dressed alike," Finn said. He hunkered down beside her and she somehow managed not to bite her tongue in surprise. Someone that big and clumsy shouldn't be able to sneak up on her. She really must have been out of it.
She wasn't going to go to the party, honestly. Usually her Saturday evenings were spent curled up on the couch with a favorite movie. But Mercedes insisted that she needed backup, even though Kurt was coming too. And Tina had let herself be coaxed from the horror movie marathon on the classics channel over to Santana's house.
Mercedes had neglected to mention that there were a lot of other people there, however, and Tina didn't know most of them. Somehow Santana had dared to integrate her Glee life with her cheerleading life, and no one was brave enough to call her on it. There weren't any of the worst football players there, but Tina was uncomfortable anyway. When Mercedes and Kurt got distracted talking about older Cheerios routines, Tina slipped outside. She spent a few minutes web-browsing on her phone, and when she was bored with that, she just sat there, feeling the cold through her thin dress.
"We dressed alike," Finn said. He hunkered down beside her and she somehow managed not to bite her tongue in surprise. Someone that big and clumsy shouldn't be able to sneak up on her. She really must have been out of it.
She glanced over at him and had to smile. Her dress had been last year's Homecoming dress, artfully ripped and bloodied with some red paint. Zombie prom queen was pretty cliche, but she hadn't had time to find a better costume. Finn, it seemed, had gone a similar route; he had mangled one of his own football jerseys and someone had painted his face into zombieism; judging by the careful smudging she could just see in the light from the party indoors, it had probably been Kurt who'd done the work.
"Zombies are the next big thing," she answered. "I heard they're going to be bigger than Twilight." She blushed a little; she wasn't very good at being witty in her opinion, but he chuckled a little.
"I hope the movies focus more on the dismembering part than the cheesy romance. Rachel made me watch all three with her," he said, and made a face.
"I'd prefer the dismembering too," she answered honestly; she'd never been into mixing horror and romance. "I mean, the vampire look is pretty suave, but I've never been into the sparkling thing."
"I'm pretty sure that was the weirdest part. There were even little tinkling bell noises. Nah, it's zombies all the way. I wrote a zombie-invasion plan when I was ten. I still have it in my room."
Tina laughed. She felt warm. Finn was blocking some of the wind, sure, but it was more about his actual presence. He was like a puppy in his eagerness. He'd been a mess after he and Rachel broke up, but he seemed to be getting past that now. He even talked to Rachel and Puck on occasion instead of calling referring to them as "the traitors." (Tina wondered why Rachel couldn't have waited a few more months to slip back into Puck's arms, but Tina had dated Artie again, knowing what would happen, so she didn't have room to talk.)
"Is dressing up like a zombie part of your plan? For camouflage?" she asked. His eyes followed her gesture when she tucked hair behind her ear.
"Oh, yeah, actually. I thought it was a good one. You just have to shuffle around and mumble about brains until you find something like a truck you can run them over with."
She leaned closer. "What if they figured you out?"
"Then I guess I'd get eaten." He shuddered. "Definitely on the list of the ten worst possible deaths of all time."
"Well, Finn," Tina said. Her heart was pounding. She'd gone for what she wanted with Mike and that had been wonderful for a while, until she was tired of just being Asian and wanted to be Tina again. Maybe it was time to take another chance.
"I promise not to eat your brains if you go back in and dance with me," she continued solemnly, holding up her hand. "Girl Scouts' honor."
"Zombie Girl Scouts or regular ones?" he asked, with a flash of smile.
"Do you see any fingers falling off? Just regular Girl Scout."
"Then I'd love to dance," he said, getting to his feet. He offered her a hand up and she squeezed it when she stood.
The zombies went back inside, hand in hand, brains full of hope.
