Excerpt: Is it sad-- perhaps: that a teenage boy would know so much of the pattern of weaponfire.
Is it sad-- perhaps: that a teenage boy would know so much of the pattern of weaponfire, of dodging and the pain of not-dodging and when to run and when to advance against the chance of getting killed.
Jake knows these things and he learns them swiftly and firmly because he can't let anyone die, can't fail his ragtag group of trying-to-preserve-our-freedom fighters; he is the leader and that means he has to be the best, for their sake.
If that means he must be first into the breach, or last, then he will do it; if it means that he has to take a bullet for their sakes, or worse, then he will do it without hesitation; he might be a teenage boy but he is also an Andalite bandit and he must act, or all will be lost.
