[Magic Knight Rayearth/Avatar] between the wonder and the why (Clef/Presea)
Title: between the wonder and the why
Fandom: Magic Knight Rayearth/Avatar fusion
Length: 430 words
Prompt: brand new breeze for two for
chibidl's birthdayfic
Pairing: Clef/Presea
Other: Shameless fluff is shameless. Set right after Balancing Act.
Excerpt: She'd never flown before and was torn between exultation and uncertainty. The world felt so far away; the sky stretched out before them in all directions.
Presea reached down and took a strong hold in Fyula's fur, her heartbeat speeding up with anticipation. Clef glanced over his shoulder at her, and then leaned down to say something to the bison. After a few rocky moments, Fyula took a few steps forward and climbed air. Presea swallowed her fear and shut her eyes, letting the breeze wash over her.
She'd never flown before and was torn between exultation and uncertainty. The world felt so far away; the sky stretched out before them in all directions. Her sword was fastened firmly to her side, and she brushed her hand over it in reassurance. The metal connected her to home, to purpose. The warmth of Fyula under her was her ticket to the future.
"What do you think?" Clef asked quietly in her ear. Her eyes popped open in surprise and she nearly jumped in her seat.
"It's--" She gestured out at the blue, searching for words. "It's beautiful, Clef. I'd never dreamed the sky was so large."
She realized it was silly right after she said it, but he just chuckled, looked back at Fyula's head to make sure their course was straight, and then sat down beside her.
"Sometimes I think it's the world's way of showing us just how small and insignificant we all are, in the end. Fire dies at this height, water becomes clouds, earth cannot reach. And even a master airbender must respect their medium, or fall."
He paused. "It has been too long since I've flown." He looked out, yearning in his face. She leaned over and nudged him gently in the shoulder.
"Why don't you show me?" she asked. "Test out my repairs."
He'd taken a quick spin when they were on the ground before, to get Fyula and make sure the alterations would hold, but he didn't mind the excuse. He picked up the glider, unfolded it, and smiled at her before leaping out into the sky. Her breath caught in her throat and then he was soaring, dancing in the wind, harbinger of grace unimpeded by gravity. Fyula made a happy sound to have company in flight, but Presea's eyes were fastened on Clef.
"Much better," he remarked when he finally returned to Fyula, folding up the glider carefully and putting it back in his pack. He seemed refreshed to Presea, years younger in appearance, with his hair mussed and a slight smile on his face.
When she kissed him, though, that was what took his breath away.
