Length: 393 words
Prompt: Genderbent requests: Syaoran and Meiling for
starlightfairy2
Pairing: slight Syaoran/male!Meiling
Other: In which Meiling has always been male.
Excerpt: Ever since he was born, Meiling has been desperately trying to be as good as Syaoran. But Syaoran is older, Syaoran is the one with magic. Meiling is the spare Li boy.
He's not going to cry. He isn't. Meiling is used to not getting his way-- it's been a constant of his young life. Ever since he was born, Meiling has been desperately trying to be as good as Syaoran. But Syaoran is older, Syaoran is the one with magic. Meiling is the spare Li boy. Even his bird is gone.
He sits down on the step and rests his head in his hands. His hands are shaking but his eyes are dry, even though he could blame the dampness on the falling rain.
"Hey."
Syaoran is nudging his foot with one of his own. Meiling looks up and glares, but has no energy to be angry.
"My bird ran away," he says. Syaoran nods. Without another word, he turns and walks into the rain. Meiling scowls again. What's that supposed to be-- a sign of strength? Syaoran doesn't need a pet bird? Well, Meiling does. The bird loves him-- or so he used to think, anyway, before it flew away without a backwards glance. The bird doesn't care that he's Meiling Li instead of Syaoran Li. It just sings for him.
Meiling sits there on the stoop and listens to the rain and the blood pounding in his ears. He memorizes the pores in the concrete and tries not to think about feathers.
An indeterminate time later, a shadow falls over Meiling. He looks up and Syaoran drips on him. His mouth twists but Syaoran exhales and gently releases a bird into Meiling's hands, cupping Meiling's grasp around the creature when shock makes him slow on the uptake.
"This is your bird, right?"
Meiling nods. There's a lump in his throat and he can't say anything. He stares up at Syaoran, and for the first time, doesn't see a rival. He sees a prince, a deserving if sometimes unwilling prince. Syaoran blinks, and Meiling looks down.
"Thanks," he says.
Syaoran nods.
"Do you want to practice later?" Meiling asks. "I'll help with your blocking."
"Sure," Syaoran answers. He shudders a moment, from the cold of the rain, and then hurriedly steps past Meiling to the door. Meiling listens to it open and close.
The bird cheeps in Meiling's fingers, and he smiles before he gets up and follows.
