[Glee] Listening Skills (Puck/Emma)

Title: Listening Skills
Fandom: Glee
Length: 964 words
Prompt: Rarepairs requests on [livejournal.com profile] glee_anon: Puck/Emma
Pairing: Puck/Emma; past Will/Emma
Other: Spoilers for 1x22 Journey; set mid-episode.

Excerpt: He likes Ms. Pillsbury, anyway. Her OCD amuses him and she actually tries to listen to him. She was patient through his entire explanation of the Super Mario Saga and the statement it makes about life in general, and then she asks him questions about his home life. Which is great, thank you very much, but at least she seems to care.

Puck has been skipping History to talk to Ms. Pillsbury ever since freshman year, when Mr. Roe told him that the paper airplanes were the last straw (even though he'd bothered to draw little swastikas on them so they were historical; or perhaps because of the swastikas). As long as he doesn't show up to class and turns in a term paper at the end of the semester, Roe passes him. Puck "pays" a member of the Chess Club to write it for him by offering him immunity from dumpster-dumping during the month that the paper is due. It's a good system.

He likes Ms. Pillsbury, anyway. Her OCD amuses him and she actually tries to listen to him. She was patient through his entire explanation of the Super Mario Saga and the statement it makes about life in general, and then she asks him questions about his home life. Which is great, thank you very much, but at least she seems to care.

She's actually hot, too, if Puck pictures her out of the floppy bows and old-lady sweaters. He's always secretly had a thing for redheads.

But Ms. Pillsbury isn't one of his cougars. She's never once said anything sexual about him, even though he's definitely given her opportunities. He's gone on and on about his frustration with Rachel and then Quinn refusing to give it up to him (again, in Quinn's case). She gives him pamphlets and smiles and tries not to look uncomfortable.

He ends up telling her a lot, especially after he joins Glee, since she's one of Schue's allies. The only time she asks him to stop is when he gets a little too graphic about being slushied. He can respect that.

He actually thinks he might miss her just a little over the summer. Though most of his time will probably be occupied by babysitting his sister when he can't get out of it, or paintballing.

He might think of her once in a while, though, and so it's with that vague concept in mind that he drifts down to her office while everyone is still being emotional over losing Glee. He might miss singing a little, but he already let Rachel talk him into participating in that gay song, and watching Schue cry makes him seriously uncomfortable.

Emma's office is dark, but the door is slightly ajar. Puck knows that there's no way she'd leave it like that, so he opens it enough to stick his head in and call out.

He hears a sniffle, and then a swift intake of breath. "Puck," she says, trying to keep her voice steady, "I don't think I can see you today."

"That's because you're in the dark, Ms. Pillsbury," he says, switching on the lights. She's sitting at her desk, clutching a framed photograph, and he would know she is upset even if she wasn't crying, because she's getting fingerprints all over the glass.

"Hey," he says, feeling awkward. He scratches the back of his mohawk and then he comes over to her side of the desk. He scoops her up in his arms just like he does for his sister when she's sick. Ms. Pillsbury doesn't weigh much more than his sister does. She squeaks out a protest when he touches her, but then she clutches at his shirt and sniffles again.

The photograph is her and Schue and if he has to guess he'd say it was taken in the school somewhere.

"I wanted to be done with him," she says with halting breaths, so quiet that he almost can't hear her.

Puck shrugs. His leg is falling asleep but he doesn't want to jostle her, so he deals with the pins and needles. She's in a delicate place right now, and he doesn't always know the right thing to do with girls, but he doesn't want to disturb her. She's probably been in here a while, he thinks, judging by the Kleenex carefully lined up in a row.

"Maybe you should be," he says, and wonders how pissed Schue will be when he finds out that Puck is the reason that Ms. P-- nah, he can probably call her Emma now; calling her Ms. Pillsbury when she's crying on his shoulder is just weird-- Emma is breaking it off with him again. Puck will never get another Glee solo. Assuming Emma tells, of course.

"I'm seeing a dentist," Emma says. He lifts a hand to pat her hair but stops. He's probably greasy and stuff. He hasn't washed his hands all day.

"Probably better for you than Schue," he says with a snort. He's never been very good at sympathy.

"Yes. Yes, you're right," she says, her tone almost stiff, and with that the moment is gone. She extracts herself from his lap carefully.

"Thank you, Puck," she says. "If you don't get going, you're going to miss the bus."

"No problem, Ms. P," he answers. "I'll catch a ride with Finn's mom. They're probably still all in the auditorium sobbing, anyway."

"Have a good summer," she says, using a clean Kleenex to pick up the rest, one at a time, and deposit them in the garbage can. He'd do it for her with one swipe, but he knows she probably has to do some sanitizing afterward, and she probably finds the smell of cleaning products comforting.

"I'll see you in the fall, Ms. P.," he says, shuffling to the door and turning back around. She's depositing the fourth Kleenex, but she looks up at him and smiles.

"I'll look forward to it," she answers, and he thinks she means it.

So maybe he's smiling a little too when he leaves.

Oh, Puck. XD

Eclat says it was totally the swastikas that did it, by the way.

But the swastikas made it historical! He should know, his mom makes him watch Schindler's List like, at least once a week.

Where are youuuuu

The swastikas make it an offensive disruption instead of just a regular one.

I was on the traaaaaiiiin.

But Puck is Jewish! How can it be offensive when he's doing it? (His words, not mine. Alkajdldl I could have a muse for this jackass so easily but I refuse to do it.)

I guess that's okaaaaaay.

I love this. It's so Puck. And the swastikas that make it ~historical, and Puck giving relationship advice that isn't terrible.
It's so sweet and just all-around excellent.

Thank you so very much!
