[Glee] Tangent to Your Curves (Santana/Brittany)

Title: Tangent to Your Curves
Fandom: Glee
Length: 1913 words
Prompt: There was a [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets secret where the OP asked why there weren't any stories in which Santana and Brittany are polyamorous and it's presented as a valid lifestyle choice. So I wrote one.
Pairing: Santana/Brittany; mentions of Puck/Mercedes and Kurt/Brittany
Other: PG for discussion of polyamory. Vague spoilers for 1x22 Journey.

Excerpt: So when Brittany comes in to Glee alone one day, and Mercedes spots Santana in the hallway, sucking face with a defenseman on the hockey team, she and Kurt and Quinn don't even have to think before they settle in around Brittany with sympathetic gazes. Quinn squeezes one of Brittany's hands, and Kurt takes the other, and because there aren't any hands left Mercedes just tries to smile.

By the second week of their junior year, the Glee kids have already settled into a routine. Santana is the new Cheerios captain and she wears the attitude in the bounce of her ponytail, but she walks into Glee in the same way, with her head held high and her pinky entwined with Brittany's.

Over the summer, Mercedes and Kurt's friendship has evolved to include Quinn, who seems to have lost most of her bitchiness along with Beth. She's fond of celebrity gossip and doesn't mind watching Project Runway reruns with them. And because they have Quinn, sometimes they have Brittany, and even more rarely, Santana.

So when Brittany comes in to Glee alone one day, and Mercedes spots Santana in the hallway, sucking face with a defenseman on the hockey team, she and Kurt and Quinn don't even have to think before they settle in around Brittany with sympathetic gazes. Quinn squeezes one of Brittany's hands, and Kurt takes the other, and because there aren't any hands left Mercedes just tries to smile.

"Santana is a jerk," she begins, "and she's not worthy of you." Brittany cocks her head to one side. Her lower lip begins to quiver with confusion.

"I don't understand," she says.

"Mercedes saw Santana making out with Rick Riordan in the hallway after second period," Kurt says. He pats Brittany's hand. "I'm... I'm sorry, Brittany."

"Why are you sorry, Kurt? Did you want to make out with Rick Riordan? That wouldn't make me sad," Brittany answers. Kurt sputters and chokes and Quinn decides to step in.

With a hint of her old impatient tone, she says, "We mean that Santana's cheating on you. Maybe she didn't expect you to notice but she could have been a little less obvious, geez."

"Oh!" Brittany says, brightening. They wait for her face to fall when the news actually sinks in, but she continues, "That's fine, I don't care. Santana and I are... Polygonal. I understand."

"You have connected edges?" Quinn says after a moment. She trades a glance with the rest of her companions, but they look just as puzzled. Brittany nods with enthusiasm.

"Yeah! Yeah, I think that's it." She nods again.

"Um," Kurt begins, but both his snark and his intelligence fails him. Santana comes in, then, hair mussed and cheeks flushed, and Mercedes, Quinn, and Kurt share another significant look. But Santana invades their little circle easily and sits down next to Brittany, untangling Quinn's grip without a word. Before Quinn can come up with a suitably fitting retort, Mr. Schuester comes in, agitated about some problem in his personal life. Doubtlessly it will become the subject of their assignment this week (last week it was "Little Shop of Horrors," because of some dentist he has issues with). Glee Club starts and they don't have a chance to confront Santana afterward because she drags Brittany off to do "homework" afterward, her grip tighter than either of theirs had been.

"We need to talk to her," Quinn says flatly.

"You told me she likes Buffy, right?" Kurt says after a moment. He's a big fan of the show (okay, of Angel and Spike, if he's honest), but when he pulled out the DVDs one lazy afternoon, Quinn had said something about Santana and how she enjoys the stabbing parts in it. (She would.)

Quinn nods. Kurt claps his hands decisively. "Okay. Friday night at my house, Buffy marathon. I'll make virgin Cosmos and she can bring her own stake if she wants one."

"That's my boy," Mercedes says fondly, and she rests her head on his shoulder for a moment.

"Not bad, Kurt," Quinn says, smiling, and when she repeats the offer to Santana and Brittany the next day, Brittany goes on about how she loves Willow and Tara so much that Santana rolls her eyes and gives in.

"But if he tries to paint my nails, I am staking him," Santana says. Brittany giggles. Santana might be nicer now, but Quinn thinks that statement skates a little too close to her old threats. She warns Kurt to hide the nail polish.

*

Finn is out with Rachel on Friday (and has been moved into his new bedroom since the end of June, which helped ease tension considerably), and Burt and Carol are on a double-date with Mercedes's parents, so they have the basement to themselves. They can't all squeeze onto Kurt's couch so Mercedes gets the armchair and Kurt chooses a pillow on the floor. This means that Quinn has to keep elbowing Brittany and Santana when their PDA gets too disgusting, but she's used to managing them.

They watch an episode full of marvelous vampire chemistry (in Kurt's opinion), but then fervent discussion evolves on the canonicity of the last season, and when Mercedes gets bored because she's never been more than a casual fan, she coughs and gives Kurt a significant glance. He pauses, craning his neck to share it with Quinn, and then he gets up and turns the lights back on.

"What, can't you lose an argument?" Santana says, her tone a growl, and Brittany pets her arm.

"It's not that," he says, sitting back down on his cushion and turning this time to face the couch. Mercedes shifts around too.

"Just because Brittany is a little..." Quinn begins, but then gets caught up in trying to find a proper word for the blonde's ignorance. Finally she gives up and continues, "...Because she's Brittany, it doesn't mean no one else notices when you cheat on her, okay."

"I saw you with Rick the Stick on Tuesday," Mercedes blurts out. She's never been good at keeping secrets, but this really isn't a secret at all. She wondered at the time if Santana was trying to bite the boy's head off, like some insects do after they mate.

"Making out," Kurt clarifies, his eyebrows raised.

Santana looks at each of them in turn, her exasperation clearly rising. Finally she ends up looking at Brittany, who just smiles.

How many times was she dropped on her head as a baby? Kurt wonders.

Finally Santana sighs irritably and throws up her hands. "I thought I told you we could tell them. If they bugged you about it," she says to Brittany.

"I did," Brittany says, brow furrowing, "but they didn't seem to understand."

"She said you guys were polygonal," Mercedes says, "which... really doesn't make any sense."

"Oh, Britt-Britt," Santana says softly, patting Brittany on the head. She's back to hardness again in just a moment, with a glare. "You guys are idiots. She means polyamorous."

"You have multiple wives?" Quinn covers her mouth with her hands, horrified, and Kurt mentally gives her eight points; would be nine but she's trying too hard.

"No. Jesus, no, Quinn, I don't have multiple wives." She gestures sharply and then closes her eyes, clearly trying to compose herself. Brittany pats her cheek and Santana laces her fingers with Brittany's.

"We're polyamorous," she says, pronouncing the word carefully. "It means we don't just love one person. We can love a lot of people. Brittany is my primary partner, though."

Kurt blinks. Mercedes stares. Quinn still has her hands over her mouth (Kurt deducts a point from her score).

"Look," Santana says, rolling her eyes. "Some people just aren't wired for monogamy. Why should we have to be? Puck is all about having a different lady every week. Why would I only date him? I'd be missing out. And Brittany is great, but sometimes I like using bigger words. That doesn't mean I don't... That I don't love her best," she says, rushing the last words. Brittany makes a happy squeaking noise and cuddles closer to Santana's arm. Santana looks up at the ceiling.

"You," she says after a moment, pointing to Kurt, "you dated Brittany last year when you thought you could fake straight. Did I get pissed at you?"

Kurt scowls. "I thought you two were on a break," he mumbles. He doesn't like to think about the way he gave away his first kiss to a girl, even if she is a very sweet girl. Mellencamp and trucker caps haven't been near his person for months, and he wants to keep it that way.

"Well, we weren't," she says, and she holds up a hand to stave off his protests. "But I didn't care. Because Brittany can date other people if she wants, as long as I know she still cares about me."

"Hold on a minute," Mercedes interjects. "You got all bitchy at me when I was dating Puck, and that wasn't even serious dating."

"You didn't ask me first, Brandy," Santana answers with a lifted eyebrow. "We might be on and off, but I still have first claim after the babymama."

There's a break in the conversation. No one can quite tell what Quinn is thinking behind her sheltered Christian girl horror. Kurt thinks about all the musicals that would be ruined if everyone turned to polyamory and quit fighting over the same woman, and Mercedes is considering arguing that she had better claim at the time, but she doesn't really want to date Puck again, so she lets it go.

"So are you happy now?" Santana says. She puts her hands on her hips and pokes Brittany in the ribs. Brittany shifts to better accommodate Santana's moods. She understands all of this already and is wondering why the other Glee kids find it so hard to comprehend. It just makes sense to her. This way she can love everyone, but Santana loves her the most. That's the perfect arrangement.

"I guess," Kurt says, "as long as you're not hurting Brittany."

"Is this moral?" Quinn asks, her first words in a long while. She's scooted away from the girls on the couch a little as if she's going to catch free love from them.

Santana snorts. "Like I care. It makes us happy. That's all that matters to me," she answers.

Quinn hesitates as if she wants to say something, but then she nods. "Okay," she says. She's been working on her kneejerk reactions to things. She's even seen Rachel a couple times over the summer and resisted sharing all but the least offensive of insults. After seeing the mess her parents made of their Christianity, she's decided to try to honestly do as Jesus did (only in modern times, because she isn't going back to camels and stuff like that). So she'll let God judge this one.

Santana looks satisfied and wraps an arm around Brittany's shoulders.

"Let's watch an episode with staking in it," she says. "I'm bored of this gay, gay, gay vampiric tension."

"I told you Spike and Angel were meant to be!" Kurt blurts to Mercedes. During the resulting argument, Quinn gets up from the couch and starts the next DVD.

And when she sees Santana making little circles on Brittany's arm with a fingertip, she smiles.

Maybe they do have it figured out. (And hey, didn't Solomon have like, a thousand wives? And they said he was very wise.)

Monday at school, Brittany and Santana come into Glee Club with their hair mussed, their cheeks pink, and their pinkies locked.

Kurt, Mercedes, and Quinn smile back.

I thought this was a lovely piece. I even managed to not mind it being written in present tense, which normally throws me off a story.

Laughed out loud at "Polygonal".

Well done!

That's definitely a stylistic problem to some people. I try not to write in it much, but sometimes it happens.

I'm really glad you liked it, thanks so much!

Even though I'm not that familiar with Glee, I find it so incredibly cute you wrote a fic for that anon.
And I hope that the OP anon gets to see this.

I liked the 'polygonal' thing as well. It was cute.

They did! They emailed me in thanks, I was really happy. idk, I just thought about it and I know a little about alternative lifestyles, and then I thought of the polygonal line, which is so Brittany. |D So I had to do it.

LMAO! Love it.

I thought this was really cute, though I would have preferred to see a little bit more from Brittany's side. Since it was mostly Santana explaining, it seemed a bit like Brittany might not fully understand or wasn't really benefiting herself from it.

Also loved the Quinn/Kurt/Mercedes friendship. I hope to see more of that in s2, because I loved Quinn/Mercedes. I actually hope to see after everything that happened to Quinn, how she feels about religion. After just a couple of comments from her (in the Madonna episode, and singing It's a Man's World) I have a vision of Quinn questioning religion and turning to fighting for women's rights. Though it'll probably never happen on the show.

Thanks for the thought! I didn't put much of Brittany in here, you're right. For some reason I didn't think about it! But I'm sure she gets some mileage out of it too. She's held Kurt's baby-soft hands, after all. |D

The Quinn/Kurt/Mercedes dynamic actually worked really well for me in the show, even if they just slammed it in last minute... I hope to see more of it too. (And Quinn/Mercedes is totally my secret OTP.)

I have a vision of Quinn questioning religion and turning to fighting for women's rights.

That would be super awesome. Though I'd also like to see her try to reconcile her religion with women's rights and maybe dial back on the conservativeness in response. After all, there are some pretty liberal churches nowadays.
