Excerpt: When the box fell open, Alois gazed and gasped and wanted. When the box fell open, Alois gazed and gasped and wanted. She was barely old enough to recognize desire, but here it was, embodied-- skin as pale and delicate as porcelain, hair like silk that hid the patch over her broken eye, an effusion of ruffles that should not, by any logic, have been contained in the suitcase. Ciela was a vision in lace, lips pursed, and if her choice in resting places hadn't been so strange, Alois would have thought her sleeping.

Alois paused for long enough that Sebastia gathered up her mistress, using a fierce gentleness that reminded Alois of Claudette, whose maidly efficiency could not be beaten. Except, perhaps, by this red-eyed stranger with the careful bun, carrying around her mistress as if the girl weighed no more than a purse. Ciela was reboxed, and so went Alois's fantasies of tearing into her skin, nipping flaws into her arms, ripping away the patch and staring into the abyss.

"Catch her!" Alois shrieked, "catch her!"

Claudette picked up her skirts delicately and chased after, her form blurring with speed. Sebastia didn't slow or falter. She didn't run like a woman, because pretense was worth less than her mistress's life.

Alois clutched her fingers in her skirts. She knew that Claudette would return empty-handed. The idea was so frustrating. Alois was used to getting everything she wanted. The seal tasted bitter on her tongue.

She kicked the half-blind maid in the shins and barely waited for the quiet protest of pain before storming up to her room and locking herself in among the fluff and trappings of female life. Claudette would be able to get in, but no one else would. The demon maid would listen to Alois's scolding with obedient nods and deference, and then they would plan.

Alois would have Ciela, or no one else would. That was how things worked. The idea made her smile, a grin with no innocence and too many teeth.

She rather liked being the spoiled child.
