[House] the human heart is curved like a road through mountains (Thirteen gen)
Title: the human heart is curved like a road through mountains
Fandom: House
Length: 280 words
Prompt: Awesome Ladies Ficathon: House, Thirteen, bisexual doesn't mean I'm afraid to admit I'm a lesbian
Pairing: Thirteen/various; mostly gen
Other: Mentioned homophobia/biphobia/straightphobia.
Excerpt: Her girlfriend screws up her nose and lectures her about being true to herself. Remy doesn't understand why - that's exactly what she's doing.
Her first girlfriend is fond of lesbian jokes. "Can't we laugh at ourselves? Everyone else does, we might as well enjoy it."
"I'm bisexual," Thirteen says, except she's Remy at this point. She wears her hair in low pigtails and looks too young to be in the bar where she met her girlfriend.
Her girlfriend screws up her nose and lectures her about being true to herself. Remy doesn't understand why - that's exactly what she's doing.
The argument and the relationship end forty minutes later when Remy dumps her chocolate shake down her girlfriend's shirt. She isn't going to change herself for anyone.
"I'm not scared of being a lesbian," she says, pausing in the doorway. The woman isn't listening; she's screeching about her sweater and juvenile behavior and straight girls pretending to be gay.
"I'm scared of not being myself," she continues. It's a good closing line and she shuts the door behind her.
She's not straight when she has a boyfriend. She's not a lesbian when she has a girlfriend. "I'm not asexual when I'm single," she points out to the fifth person who tries to make her choose. She goes to GBLT Pride celebrations with men and she scoffs at anyone's labels but her own.
Some people are okay with this; a lot of them aren't. Sometimes it hurts. She carries on, because what she has is hers and no one is taking that away.
She might not have much time. She might be battling her genetics for each hour. So she's going to enjoy life to the fullest, no matter what everyone else thinks.
She's proud of who she is.
