Excerpt: Doumeki had been told once that the road to Hell was paved with good intentions. He'd considered for a moment and nodded. It was one of the most sensible roads to Hell, he thought. One of the widest.

"I didn't expect to see you here again," she said, with some resignation in her voice. Doumeki knew she was lying, but he expected it of her by now. Yuuko lived in a blanket of lies that all ended up being true.

For example, Watanuki would never be seeing spirits again. If that was because he wouldn't in fact be seeing anything again, since he was dead, it wasn't a breach of promise. Just a breach of trust.

Watanuki, Doumeki thought, had such a weakness for pretty girls. He always thought they would do him no harm. Doumeki had long figured out that it was the opposite, at least in Watanuki's case. It was often with the best of intentions, of course.

Doumeki had been told once that the road to Hell was paved with good intentions. He'd considered for a moment and nodded. It was one of the most sensible roads to Hell, he thought. One of the widest.

"Yes, you did," Doumeki said to Yuuko, and she nodded without shame. She gestured vaguely in the direction of the shop and strode up the walk. He followed.

At the door, the little girls took his coat and he stepped into smoke so thick it obscured his vision for a moment. He blinked and let his eyes adjust to the dimness.

The place was neither as clean nor as welcoming as it had been when Watanuki was here, as far as he remembered. Of course, when he visited he was generally busy with other things, such as the gravely injured man he was carrying. Doumeki stepped around a small stack of bowls and stood still. Yuuko was reclining lazily on the duvet, holding court without effort. The little girls stood next to her on either side.

"What is your wish?" she asked, lifting her hand and brushing through her hair.

"You know what it is," Doumeki replied. Yuuko pursed her lips.

"There are some things I cannot do."

"I don't think this is one of them."

"You have nothing to give," she said.

"Memories," he replied, remembering the stories Watanuki had told of an amber-eyed boy and his determination.

"The circumstances aren't quite the same," she replied in a cold voice. "Don't you think... I would have avoided this, if I could have?"

"If you could have still accomplished your purposes, you would have," Doumeki told her.

Yuuko sighed and ran her hand across her head impatiently.

"It wouldn't be enough," she said. "I would have to totally write you out, and then he wouldn't have lived long enough."

"There must be something."

"I--" Yuuko said, lifting her arms in exasperation. "There really isn't. I'm not a miracle-worker."

"Certainly not," Doumeki said. It was delivered in his usual deadpan not-sarcasm, but she flinched anyway.

"I am as sorry as you are," she said, lowering her voice so that he had to step a little closer to hear.

"No, you're not," he said. He turned around and presented his back to her, his hands unconsciously clenching at bowstrings.

"If--"

He turned.

"If you're willing, I can send you sideways. But there are no guarantees."

"Please," Doumeki said simply.

Yuuko opened the door to the back room of the shop.

"He won't remember," she said to him, holding the door open with her hip.

"New memories," Doumeki said in what was a cheery tone for him, and he walked through into another universe.

"HEY WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING YOU!!!" a voice yelled as its owner collided with him. Doumeki smiled.

I love the xxxHOLIC universe, because almost anything is possible now. It's sad in a way though, because its like no one can accept anything now and get on with their lives. Their is now something else to try if they so wish. I guess thats the danger of being able to wish too much.

Annnd, totally went off on a tangent there. xD I loved it as usual! Can't wait to see the rest of the prompts!

Hmm, well I don't really have an idea on that one, given that I don't keep up with xxxHOLiC's Japanese release. I was just playing around with ideas. Glad you liked it though!
