It is my gift to a mother I cannot remember: I live and love just as she did. Or perhaps it is her gift to me, a simple ability to be happy no matter where I am, a quirky sort of naivety, a shining smile.

I can't remember her, but that's never made me sad. My brother and my father are tied down by their memories of her, and every thought of Nadeshiko is a reminder she is dead. All of my memories of her are gifts from other people, and remind me that she lives in all of our hearts.

I am my own person, bearing her sweet smile and glass-green eyes. I was her gift to the world. She was my mother.

As long as I bear her colors, Nadeshiko is never gone.
