Summary: Sakura comes to visit Syaoran and he's more
surprised than he should be.
"We are now arriving in Hong Kong. Thank you for flying Cathay Pacific Airways," the captain informed them. Sakura stretched a little and her eyes brightened. Finally she was here! The flight had felt so long--
--Or perhaps it was that it had been so long since she had seen Syaoran. But that didn't matter.
She giggled a little, pleased with herself that she had come up with the brilliant idea to plan a visit for his birthday. He had come for hers last year, but she hadn't visited him in Hong Kong since they were still elementary schoolers.
She had a map and her smile, and since it was Sakura that took her all the way to the Li doorstep, despite her lack of Chinese and general helplessness. She raised her hand to knock and that's when the door opened. Unbalanced, she fell, but a familiar hand was offered to help her up. She looked up into Syaoran's eyes and was surprised to see the hurt in them.
"Syaoran-kun?" she said, worried.
"Sakura-chan," he said without intonation.
"Syaoran-kun, who is this girl?" someone asked in Chinese. Sakura didn't understand the meaning, but she'd never seen the girl before, either. She was blue-eyed and fair-skinned, and holding firmly to Syaoran's hand. Sakura raised an eyebrow as the two conversed in Chinese briefly and she let him go.
"I came for your birthday," Sakura said, trying to recover her cheer despite the bad thoughts racing through her mind. Syaoran nodded.
"It's good to see you," he said, but he was a terrible liar, and Sakura looked from the girl to her boyfriend and back again, and couldn't hold back the tears. She probably looked ridiculous sitting on the front porch of the Li manor crying her eyes out, but she had probably earned the privilege.
"This is Chin Kim," he said, gesturing helplessly to the other girl. "She doesn't speak Japanese, so this might be hard to explain."
Sakura's tears came faster, but she managed to climb to her feet. She felt wobbly. So much of her life had been based around Syaoran-- almost eight years now. It wasn't easy, either. There were phone calls, letters, the occasional visit-- but it was as Tomoyo said once, that every time Sakura was in contact with Syaoran she was herself again, and happy, and that was all Tomoyo wanted. As for Sakura, Syaoran was all she wanted, the boy who had held her when she was sad and helped her win her struggles. She couldn't have survived the Cardcaptor years without him.
She didn't want to survive life without him. So much of her was focused on Syaoran that to remove him from her life would leave a gaping hole, and it would be hard for her to smile again.
"It's always difficult to separate soulmates," Eriol would tell her later when she called him, sobbing. This was something magic couldn't fix, he would tell her as well, though he wished he could ease her pain.
"Konnichiwa?" Kim said uncertainly to the crying girl. From the ashamed way that Syaoran looked at her, it was clear that there was history there, and probably not pleasant history. It was hard to get him to open up about anything, and his years in Japan had been no exception.
"There was a girl I met there," Syaoran had said once, when he came back from his business trip in April, and his eyes had been far-away, and for a moment a smile had graced his lips. But that was all.
"Kinomoto Sakura," Sakura said to Kim, bowing submissively. "Happy birthday," she said to Syaoran, wiping her eyes. She started to walk away and he called her name.
"SAKURA!"
It reminded her of things lost past and his hugs and the way he had held her, so gently. She walked faster.
"You don't understand," he called after her, already sounding defeated. She faded into the crowded street and was gone.
"Who was that girl?" Kim said to Syaoran, taking his hand again out of habit. He looked down at their fingers with something resembling distaste, and then his hand tightened around hers. This is what he wanted, right? The family's choice for him, a girl with magic in her blood, a girl who didn't show the Li clan up and take the cards from under their noses.
It wasn't really.
Still, he didn't go after her, and Kinomoto Sakura walked away into a new life without Syaoran. It was freeing in a way, but freeing like nothing she did mattered anymore. But Sakura had always been strong, hadn't she?
"Everything is going to be all right," she said, and couldn't believe it, but she walked away to her hotel room to book tickets home. It was time to begin anew.
There would be another day.
