Excerpt: Their first Christmas after getting married wasn't particularly big or eventful, but it was Rika's favorite. She'd been blushing with the enthusiasm of a newlywed, decorating the house in a Western manner, bells and popcorn chains and glitter.
Their first Christmas after getting married wasn't particularly big or eventful, but it was Rika's favorite. She'd been blushing with the enthusiasm of a newlywed, decorating the house in a Western manner, bells and popcorn chains and glitter.
Her constant smile enchanted Yoshiyuki Terada, who still sometimes woke in the middle of the night, amazed and proud that the woman sleeping beside him was his wife. It had been six years of struggle to hide their love from a public that would not understand, but seeing her winding a wreath of boughs and holly was worth the fight. Seeing her every day was worth it.
So he was amused by the little tree that she put on the coffeetable, and the plans she'd made them for dinner, and the nightgown she'd tucked, blushing when he teased her about it, into the back of her lingerie drawer. How she'd found time to do all she did and still go to school amazed him. School was as much work to her as it was to him, and she still kept the house spotless, his clothes mended, his dinner cooked, refusing most of his help. She was a perfect housewife, and a perfect woman-- not that he'd ever doubted.
He came home from work late, after coaching a club practice, on the 25th, to see little sprigs of greenery tacked above their door-- and all of the doors in their house.
"Mistletoe," his wife said. He scooped her up in his arms and kissed her sweetly.
"I don't need an excuse to kiss you," he said, but made sure to pause in every door.
