Inherited (Doumeki gen)
Title: Inherited
Fandom: xxxHOLiC
Length: 180 words
Prompt:
writing_game Week 64: D+2, Déjà-vu
Pairing: Doumeki gen
Other: Spoilers for ch186.
Excerpt: He'd never thought that the witch could be Watanuki's mother; at least, not the one who gave birth to him, though she'd certainly guided him like one when she was alive.
Doumeki was aware that Watanuki didn't know who his parents were. They were dead, the other boy had told him once, matter-of-factly, but after being around Watanuki and Yuuko for long enough, Doumeki suspected that wasn't all of the story.
He'd never thought that the witch could be Watanuki's mother; at least, not the one who gave birth to him, though she'd certainly guided him like one when she was alive. They didn't have similar auras, or temperments, or anything in common, really, except the power to see the things that were really there.
At least, not until Watanuki stepped into her shoes and Doumeki felt sometimes like it was Yuuko staring back at him from those mismatched eyes, wearing that half-grin that said she knew more than anyone did. Watanuki in his waiting was coming to resemble her more than could be healthy.
Something deep in him wondered if she'd anticipated this, in the end, if she knew what Watanuki would become. He put his hand in his pocket and closed it gently around the egg.
He hoped so.
