Meiling had had enough.
She'd had enough of the way that conversation stopped when she entered a room. She had enough of the sad looks and the whispers. She'd had enough of this pity party, and she was the "honored guest."
"Don't feel bad for me," she blurted out, the next time that Fanren mentioned her upcoming wedding plans and then cut herself off, glancing guiltily at Meiling. "It's for the best, you know." She smiled a little. That was still hard to say, but between Tomoyo's comfort and her own strong will, she was beginning to believe it.
Her cousins all petted her on the head and called her an adorable little martyr. Meiling sighed and let them until they became distracted and drifted away.
"It's for the best," she said again to herself, feeling the truth in it, pushing away the frustration of her family's reaction. And that was all that mattered.
