Excerpt: She twitched her tail self-consciously, staring down at the ocean and then letting her glance dart back at him. Her eyes were curious. Jack grinned.

Jack had been marooned (again, again, again, wasn't this becoming a habit of his?) for a week on the small island before he came around the trees to the beach and saw the mermaid sitting on a rock not far out from the sand.

He'd never seen a mermaid before, but he wasn't entirely surprised to confirm their existence. Elizabeth had told him that sailors sometimes mistook sea cows for beautiful women. He wasn't sure what sort of sailors would make that mistake. Blind ones, perhaps?

She was singing, her throat golden, kissed with sunlight, and she was combing a fork through her hair. She was the most beautiful sea cow in existence, if that's what she was.

But Captain Jack was pretty certain she was actually a mermaid. The scaly green tail was a big indication. He wasn't sure the procedures for greeting a mermaid, so he checked his hat and then stepped out into the water. Her back was to him, white and clean and unpockmarked, more beautiful than any of the whores he'd ever stripped in his time, even the expensive ones.

He coughed. She froze, and then turned, her gorgeous eyes widening at his presence.

"O-oh!"

"G'day, madam," Jack replied, leering as he bowed and removed his hat in one flowing motion. He winked.

"A human!" she said. He preened his fingers on his jacket.

"Aye," he answered. "And ye..."

She twitched her tail self-consciously, staring down at the ocean and then letting her glance dart back at him. Her eyes were curious. Jack grinned.

"I'm Ariel," she said. When he took another step forward, she scooted backward on the rock. Playing hard-to-get, he supposed. All right. He put his hat back on his head and smiled again.

"Captain Jack Sparrow, at your service," he replied. "Miss Ariel. 'Twas a lovely song you was singing, though I'm not certain of your use of cutlery. Much better employed as a weapon, I think."

"What?"

She cocked her head to one side in confusion, and shrugged a little. Jack watched seashells move and wondered how it worked with mermaids. The tail seemed like a bit of a barrier. Of course, he was willing to experiment. Pirates soon learned to make do.

"Never you mind, princess," he replied. She opened her mouth in a surprised O.

"How did you know I'm a princess?"

"Yer regal bearing," he lied skillfully. It made her smile.

She placed the fork in a bag she had at her side and then studied him again for a moment.

"I was wondering if you could teach me about humans," she said sweetly. Jack grinned and took another few steps toward her.

"Much to learn, Princess Ariel," he began, "though I'm sure we can learn together--"

But his advance was ruined by the sudden appearance of a seagull, which flew out of nowhere producing an awful honking noise.

"Scuttle!" the mermaid said, letting the bird alight next to her. It squawked at her urgently.

"Sebastian?" she exclaimed, sounding horrified. She glanced back at Jack for one longing moment.

"I can't get caught!" she said before turning and jumping off the rock into the sea. She was gone with a flip of her gorgeous tail. Jack stared for a moment, and then sighed. He waded out the rest of the way to her rock and hauled himself up onto it, resting his head on his hand grumpily.

He was never quite sure where the crab had come from, but its pincers woke him quite easily from his daydreams of mermaids. He did his best to pry it off and keep it for dinner, swearing a blue streak as he did, but it was a crafty little bugger and soon slipped back beneath the waves. Jack sighed again, forlorn, and trudged back to shore.

Though he came back the next day, the only living thing he saw was the damn seagull. (He threw a rock at it, but it dodged.)

And of course, when he found the Pearl again, no one believed his story.

*********OMAKE*********

"That strange headdress is called that, really?" Ariel asked curiously. Scuttle nodded.

"Had to be. That's was all he kept saying when he was jumping around and holding it on his head. Over and over!" The seagull flapped his wings in emphasis.

"Fuck," Ariel repeated. "Not a very pretty word, I think. What do you think he meant by 'cutlery'?"

Scuttle cocked his head to one side. "Cutlery, cutlery, cutlery. That means... seashell. The humans use them as weapons-- they throw them at each other!"

Ariel looked down at her chest in puzzlement. "I wouldn't think it would be very effective if I threw them at him."

The bird shrugged. "Who knows, with humans?"

She laughed, patting him on the head. "You know more than I do, Scuttle! Thanks for telling me everything."

"A pleasure, Ariel, as always," the bird responded proudly.
