Excerpt: When it is midnight in London, it is eight a.m. the next morning in Japan. He stays up late and she gets up early, the sighing and yawns on the line embarrassing to her, amusing to him.
He teaches her English so that she can visit. She's learned in school, of course, but there's something about Eriol's voice, soothing on the phone, that helps her concentrate.
It's a long-distance call, expensive for English lessons unless they carefully coordinate. When it is midnight in London, it is eight a.m. the next morning in Japan. He stays up late and she gets up early, the sighing and yawns on the line embarrassing to her, amusing to him.
She shuts her eyes and listens to him talk. "In England," he says in Japanese, "we're always complaining about the rain. The word for rain is--"
"And is it raining right now, Eriol-kun?" she asks after he conjugates the verb.
"It is," he replies, "can't you hear it?"
She can only hear her heart thumping, and deep silence on the line. In-between his words there are no background noises.
"I can imagine it," she breathes. "When I come to visit, I'll bring a bright umbrella."
"You will make the rain go away, no doubt," he says, "because the sun will want to see your smile."
"Eriol-kun..."
He hums a couple bars of "You Are My Sunshine" under his breath, not that he expects her to get the reference.
"Aishiteru," he says finally. "I love you," he repeats in English. She says nothing for a long moment. In the clamped-down silence of the long-distance call, he fumbles with the phone and almost drops it.
Tomoyo (has wonderful English and) has told him to give her his feelings, because she'll make the decision that is right for her. She was very kind to Syaoran before he went away, but she didn't burden herself with his love for her. She wouldn't do that for Eriol's feelings either, Tomoyo told him. The thought makes him glad.
"Could you say it again?" she asks. "In English?"
"I love you," he replies, feeling the warmth of her voice surround him, even though she is still so very far away. The clock strikes one. He will be tired tomorrow.
"I love you," she repeats, her accent poor but her voice bright.
The rain slows, and stops. It's not his doing-- Eriol doesn't have enough power to change the weather anymore-- but he's grateful all the same.
"Your English is getting better," he says, and she laughs.
"I'll come to visit in the spring," she says.
"I'll provide the umbrella," he answers, and he stays up and they talk of nothing until their faces hurt from grinning even though the other one can't see it.
"I love you," she says before she hangs up. It gives him pleasant dreams.
