Ariel might never have noticed Jasmine if she hadn't caught her dancing. Her only impression of the famous Arabian princess was that of tan skin, doe-shaped eyes, irritation. Jasmine hadn't come to college here to be famous royalty. She'd come for an education, she declared to the reporters on the first day, tossing her head haughtily.
Even so, she was easily talked into joining their sorority, because hey, a princess in the ranks couldn't be a bad thing, and she'd come to the house parties and probably made her own friends and enjoyed herself. Ariel just hadn't been particularly interested.
She'd been up half the night studying for an exam the next morning, reading the material until the boundary between dreams and reality began to blur, and the world became somewhat fuzzy around the edges. Finally, she sighed and closed the book, and crept down the hall to take her contacts out. She looked out the window on her way back for no particular reason, really, just to see if the sun was really rising like she suspected it was.
She pushed her glasses up on her nose and stared at the figure on the lawn. The dawn was indeed beginning to break, shining sharply on the woman dancing on the lawn. The light flashed off of the simple golden circlet Jasmine wore, dazzling Ariel a little, but she gasped simply because of the gentle beauty of the dance.
It wasn't something she'd ever seen before, the dips and turns and footwork of a foreign culture, but it was gorgeous, the way Jasmine pointed her feet, and swung her arms, like flying near to the ground.
Watching her, Ariel felt like she should sweep out onto the dew-soaked grass and join her. She would look ridiculous for trying, but perhaps she could capture just a tiny portion of the joy in the princess's feet. She wanted to tie her hair up and put on a ruffled shirt and waltz with the girl, to touch her hip and guide her to music only they heard.
She sighed and only went back to her room when Jasmine stopped dancing, tucking herself under the covers in a hurry. It was important, somehow, that Jasmine didn't know she was watching. It gave her the freedom to be as creative as she liked.
Ariel fell asleep with her fingers on her clit, trying to recapture the glory alone, and knowing she couldn't.
In her dreams, Jasmine whirled and dipped and flew, and Ariel sighed with longing.
