Five Times Meiling Didn't Apologize (Meiling/Tomoyo)

Title: Five Times Meiling Didn't Apologize
Length: 589 words
Prompt: five things for Meiling/Tomoyo; [livejournal.com profile] dreximgirl's request
Pairing: Meiling/Tomoyo established; Syaoran/Sakura mentioned
Other: character death in #2
Excerpt: She went home with Tomoyo that night and slept with her face pressed into her girlfriend's shoulder, smelling the lilac of the perfume Tomoyo only wore for very special occasions. She woke up with Tomoyo's kisses patterned gently across her forehead, her eyelashes, and the corner of her mouth. And Meiling smiled.

1. the first time they fought

She's been driving-- nowhere in particular, just away-- for twenty minutes before she realizes it was a stupid fight. She pulls over and fumbles with her phone. The first time she misdials and the second time, the line is busy, but Tomoyo picks up the third time

"I'm--" Meiling began, but Tomoyo breathed heavily on the line.

"Don't say it," she interrupted. "Don't say it."

"But--"

"Just come home," Tomoyo replied, and Meiling was back on the road within a minute.

2. the day Sonomi died

The phone rang shrilly in the apartment and Meiling looked at it. She didn't have any magic, sure, but she did have a feeling of foreboding.

Before she could voice her concern, Tomoyo leaned over the arm of the couch and answered it. Her face went white and stark for just a moment before twisting into a smile.

"Yes, thank you. Yes, I'll be there as soon as possible."

"What's going on?" Meiling asked as soon as her girlfriend hung up.

"My mother is dead," she replied softly. "I'll have to make the plane arrangements."

Meiling had never seen Tomoyo like this, with all the cheer and fight gone out of her. It's like she had become a paper doll-- a limp one. Tomoyo wouldn't discuss it at all until she'd called the airline, work, and the company they were supposed to host tonight to explain the problem.

But when she was done, she fell into Meiling's lap, sobbing very softly, and Meiling didn't apologize-- she just stroked her hair, and held her, and hoped that it was enough.

3. the day of Sakura's wedding

Sakura had, in all likelihood, too many bridesmaids, but she never knew how to say no, and Meiling stood up there next to Tomoyo and watched as Tomoyo didn't cry, as Tomoyo held the train of her best friend's dress, as Tomoyo failed to catch the bouquet.

She went home with Tomoyo that night and slept with her face pressed into her girlfriend's shoulder, smelling the lilac of the perfume Tomoyo only wore for very special occasions. She woke up with Tomoyo's kisses patterned gently across her forehead, her eyelashes, and the corner of her mouth. And Meiling smiled.

She didn't need to apologize at all.

4. the time they got lost

Meiling and Tomoyo both had a great sense of direction, but it was generally Meiling's task to navigate when they visited her family in China. She'd grown up there, after all.

So it was actually surprising to her that they turned a corner in a familiar place and found themselves utterly lost, in the middle of a street market in an old part of town. It was a little grubby, but not too frightening, and Tomoyo was looking around in wonder.

"I think we're lost," Meiling leaned over and whispered in her girlfriend's ear, clutching her a little more closely.

"Wonderful," Tomoyo replied, squeezing her hand. "Let's wander around, then."

"But don't you have to--"

She shook her head, her smile widening. "We'll be all right. Let's just be together."

She slid her hand up to rest around Meiling's upper arm, claiming her to the obvious jealousy of a few nearby men, and so they wandered, cheerfully, until Meiling figured out where they were.

And then they wandered a little more, but they weren't lost: just enjoying themselves.

5. the day they got married

Meiling fell over her own feet, lost her tie (twice), almost forgot the vows, and stumbled when she lifted Tomoyo's veil.

She didn't apologize; she just kissed her twice.
