Excerpt: He was a professor-- he didn't take apprentices. But sometimes Remy pretended she was his apprentice, because he was such a cool guy.
He was a professor-- he didn't take apprentices. But sometimes Remy pretended she was his apprentice, because he was such a cool guy. Layton was in all of the papers with the amazing mysteries he solved.
Sometimes he needed someone to grade papers. That was where she came in. She was his assistant.
She liked to sit in his office and mark tests while he told her stories. He was always concentrated on the artifact or puzzle before him, but he talked to her anyway, about the places he'd been, the people he'd met, the puzzles he'd solved.
She'd been helping him for about a year when she came in one morning and he was rising from his desk and settling his customary top hat onto his head. He seemed surprised to see her; distracted. He looked right through her for a second, but then he smiled.
"I've got a case," he said, and her heart leapt. "Case" was his codeword for an adventure taking him out of university, she knew. The stories he would tell when he got back!
"Would you like to come along?" he said next, and she didn't hesitate to follow.
Layton's assistant would save the day!
