Excerpt: "I don't understand how you can be so calm about this. They said they're going to execute us in the morning."
"I don't understand how you can be so calm about this. They said they're going to execute us in the morning."
"I know," Kit said, squinting his eyes into the light of an alien moon. The girl he was imprisoned with ran her fingernail across the dirty floor of the cell.
"We got out of worse things."
"You... you and Mom?" she said softly.
"Yeah."
"But this time... she's not here. And I'm... well, you know." The girl looked up and studied her father's face for just a second before ducking her head again.
"Wizard or not," Kit said, building a spell in the back of his mind, "you're still my daughter. We'll get out of this."
"Dad--"
"I can hear someone coming. Get behind me, and be ready to run."
"Okay," she said without hesitation (after all, she was her father's daughter).
