Excerpt: A wizard does not lie, and when Kit asks Nita if she is tired, she nods.

A wizard does not lie, and when Kit asks Nita if she is tired, she nods. She wants to say no, that she will stand and fight forever, but all of the wizards are taking shifts. There's no shame in it.

If they were younger, they'd be pulling doubles, maybe even triples, because Earth has only one sun, but they aren't young anymore. A wizard does not lie.

So she and Kit take a rest, and when they wake, the sky hasn't fallen yet, but there is a new spell to pour energy into and a new force emerging and she hasn't felt this alive since the last time they faced the Lone One as a team.

She can see Timeheart, she thinks: the sky is bright, the wizards are concentrated, and though that place is unblighted by the Lone One's work, this feels nearly as perfect.

She is smiling when the spell backlashes onto her.
