Sometimes Mark thought that Vanessa was born as an adult, had just popped into existence with a schedule and a fondness for white carpet. She'd decided when they were getting married instead of playing house, and now she'd decided on a baby. And he'd thought, maybe, well, that adoption was difficult and surely it would take a while and...
