Excerpt: She stole the security tape while Rollo was in the bathroom.
She stole the security tape while Rollo was in the bathroom. He wouldn't notice. She knew exactly which one she wanted, after all. When he came back, she was sucking on a lollipop innocently.
"You should come to our show, old man," she said, knowing that the clerk would decline and blow a raspberry, but the ensuing argument lasted for the rest of her shift, and that was worth something, at least.
She went home and popped the tape in the VCR, fast-forwarding through petty theft and the lady who studied the shampoo aisle as if there'd be a test later. And there she was, barely recognizable, she thought, all ponytail and innocence. It made her laugh. But this was the beginning of it all.
The door slammed and Paulie came in. He looked at the scratchy videotape and then at her. His confusion was adorable as usual. She mimicked swinging a bat and said, eyebrow raised, "You've hit another home run, pardner."
"What?"
"We're pregnant. Well, I'm going to do all the work, but I guess I can give you some credit," she said, and this time he grinned, and hugged her.
