Excerpt: "I said, 'Piss off,'" the man replied, enunciating clearly and then grinning in triumph.
"Can I help you?" Layton said. The man turned and blanched, the cigar falling out of his mouth. Helpfully Layton put it out with his shoe. The man glared.
"Whadda want?" he growled.
"I was just noticing that you looked like you were waiting for someone. Can I go get that person for you?"
He gestured at the college gates and smiled.
"No, no, no," the other said gruffly. "I'll just wait. Piss off."
"Excuse me?"
Layton's expression did not change, exactly, but his look became a little more concentrated.
"I said, 'Piss off,'" the man replied, enunciating clearly and then grinning in triumph.
"I say, that doesn't seem like very appropriate language. This is a school," Layton said, frowning this time. "What is your name, sir?"
"Noneyer," the other snorted. He looked Layton up and down, muttered something like, "Just wait," and sloped off around the corner.
Layton watched him go, confused.
"Did I do something?" he mumbled to himself. When no answer presented itself, he went to class.
