Claire was steady.

It wasn't a trait one cultivated in a girl, generally, but her father had always appreciated having someone else to hold the beaker, and that generally required a certain fearlessness that most women weren't raised to have. His wife gone, he cultivated it in his daughter, and she turned out to be as strong a scientist as he.

It was a good thing, too, given the man she fell in love with. Hershel was an archaeologist, deciphering the past, distracted by puzzles, and he was also utterly clueless when dealing with women. She had to make the first move.

So she did, and the blush on his face told her it was the right one. Not that she had ever doubted.
