Excerpt: And nothing else. No puzzle to solve that would give him a clue. Just four words scrawled on butcher paper, and a lot to worry about.

It was just a slip of paper, but Layton clutched it like a lifeline. He had milked everything from it he could: he had scoured stationery stores for the paper and the pen marks; he had wandered typewriter resellers and pawnshops in hopes of finding a match for the weird B. They had led him nowhere.

I have the boy.

And nothing else. No puzzle to solve that would give him a clue. Just four words scrawled on butcher paper, and a lot to worry about. He removed his hat and ran his hand through his hair, leaning back against the wall and trying to think of what to do next.

He couldn't go home and tell Flora that Luke was missing. He just couldn't.
