Excerpt: "War?" If Luke's eyes had been wide before, they seemed now as though they might fall out.

"Professor, I don't understand why I have to be so clean," Luke whined, looking at himself in the mirror and running a hand through his hair. Layton frowned meaningfully and handed his apprentice a comb.

"We're meeting someone important, my boy," he said, and when Luke looked at the comb without using it, he took it back and ran it through the boy's unruly hair, flattening it except for a ducktail that stuck up in the back. He frowned at the offending hair and then gave Luke his cap. The boy settled it firmly on his head.

"And who are we meeting, Professor? Someone famous requires your services?" he said, eyes shining in admiration of his mentor.

Luke lay a finger aside of his nose and smiled. "You can't tell anyone at school, mind you."

Luke's eyes went wide. "Who, Professor?" he asked again, squirming in excitement.

"You'll wrinkle your jacket, my boy, calm down. We're going to see... the king."

"The king? But we don't have any king--"

"--Of a far-off land. He's come to London to ask our help with a very difficult puzzle which could mean war in his country."

"War?" If Luke's eyes had been wide before, they seemed now as though they might fall out.

"It's something to do with the succession to the throne. We'll get it all sorted out, don't worry."

"A king..." Luke said in awe. After a moment, he removed his cap and tried to make his ducktail lie flat, to no avail.

"Just be polite," Layton said, adjusting his own hat, "and we'll have a bit of an adventure, all right?"

Luke nodded, and followed Layton out the door.
