It wasn't unusual for Sebastian or Ciel to run into strangers when about on their adventures, but normally, they weren't so...

Well, they actually looked like respectable members of society. But they were interfering with the case.

"The Queen has asked my assistance on this one," Ciel insisted, scowling up at the top-hatted man, who just smiled and crouched down on his haunches to be closer to Ciel's height. It was a smile and a posture meant for children, and that infuriated the Phantomhive heir.

"I hear that it's quite a puzzle," the man said genially. "Wouldn't you like a bit of aid?"

"Sebastian!" Ciel called, presenting his back to the other. But his butler was suddenly nowhere to be found.

"Is that your mentor's name?" the man asked.

"SEBASTIAN!"

"Over here!"

Ciel turned and narrowed his eyes. There he was-- petting a cat held by a little boy in blue shortpants. The two of them were grinning like idiots.

Trust Sebastian to find the one cat in all of London who would stand his misplaced affection.

"You'd probably get along with my apprentice, Luke," the man said to Ciel. "That's him with the cat. He'd probably play Kings and Queens with you, or whatever game you're talking about."

Ciel put his hand to his face in irritation and embarrassment.

"Sebastian, we're leaving," he called to the demon. Sebastian stood to his feet, ruffling the cat and then the other boy on the head, before he came to his master's side.

"Nice hat," Sebastian said to the stranger.

"Leaving," Ciel repeated, stomping off and waiting for his butler to follow. Sebastian shrugged and did.
