The professor was the best guy in the world. There was simply no way to argue with it. He took care of Luke and Flora and worked hard as a professor and helped anyone who asked.
"It's the way of an English gentleman," the professor would say when asked. And that's what he believed.
Luke loved him. There was no one better.
But lately he'd been having these really confusing dreams. He'd always been happy to be with the professor in any sort of situation but now he sort of wondered... what it would be like to hold the professor's hand, or to hug him at any random time, or even...
...to kiss him.
Boys weren't supposed to kiss boys, though, right?
"Professor, I have a question," he said finally, sitting down at the kitchen table as he came in after school. Layton was working on a puzzle someone had written down for him, and he didn't look up, but nodded that he was listening. Luke dropped his head into his hands so he wouldn't have to see the professor's face when he spoke.
"If a boy... likes another boy... is that bad?"
"It's always good to make friends," the professor said, scribbing thoughtfully on his puzzle, and Luke gulped, looking down at the table between his fingers.
"Like... more than a friend."
This time Layton looked up and studied his flustered apprentice for a moment. Then he smiled a little.
"Luke, you can look at me."
As he suspected, Luke's face was flushed and his eyes darted around the room, not meeting Layton's.
"Professor..." he squeaked. Layton got up from the table and came around to Luke's side. He bent down and then very deliberately kissed his apprentice on the cheek.
"Was that a bad thing?" he asked.
"I--" Luke stuttered in shock, lifting a hand to his burning cheek.
"Love is, by definition, never wrong," he said. "But to be visible to society, love must be appropriate. It must abide by rules. I would not be able to kiss you, even like that, on the street. But it is not, necessarily wrong."
Luke stared at his mentor for a long moment, studying the soft smile on Layton's face. Then he nodded.
"Thanks, Professor!" he said, getting up from the table himself and darting down the hallway to his bedroom to do his homework.
Layton just smiled, and sat down to finish his puzzle.
