The Prosecutor's Apprentice Saves the Day (Luke gen)
Title: The Prosecutor's Apprentice Saves the Day
Fandom: Professor Layton/Phoenix Wright
Length: 393 words
Prompt: Prof Layton (Anon) Fan Meme: Miles EdgeworthxLuke, assistant or legal.
Pairing: Luke gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: He sincerely hoped, as well, that Layton had only met this man through correspondence, and never in person, because the violently purple suit and ruffled cravat was the sure sign of a diseased mind.
It was, first and foremost, Layton's idea that he get some more job experience in a summer internship elsewhere. That was what he could tell people, right? He'd tell them when he met them, actually. The moment they looked up at his glaring boss and made conclusions.
He sincerely hoped, as well, that Layton had only met this man through correspondence, and never in person, because the violently purple suit and ruffled cravat was the sure sign of a diseased mind.
Except this man had channeled his disease into his work, and he was very, very good at what he did... which was another thing Luke could tell people who met his boss. They called him the demon prosecutor, which was a lot more than could be said for most of the authorities around here. Bad fashion could certainly be forgiven if one had a title like that.
"Are you listening?" Edgeworth snapped, and Luke started.
"Of course, Mr. Edgeworth," he stuttered.
Edgeworth narrowed his eyes. "Objection! Then what did I just say?"
"Well, um..."
"I can smell it when you lie," the man said. "Stop trying. And take this down. I'll need as much preparation for court as possible with Wright on the other side of the courtroom. That man wiggles out of the most airtight cases..."
"Right," Luke said, nodding and licking the end of the pen before setting it to paper and carefully jotting down Edgeworth's points, numbering them neatly. When he was done, Edgeworth took the page and studied it.
"Airtight," he muttered again, and then carefully placed on in the stack of papers in his briefcase. He snapped the locks shut and then looked down at his new apprentice thoughtfully.
"Come with me to the courtroom. Wright brings his little apprentice all the time. They won't throw you out, and I won't unless you don't behave," he said dryly, already striding out of the room.
Luke opened his mouth to protest, but he'd learned very quickly that arguing with Edgeworth was a terrible idea. He took off behind his mentor towards the courtroom doors.
Solving the cases were like solving puzzles, and Luke enjoyed that, but Edgeworth didn't appreciate anyone poking holes in his witness's testimony, so he bit his lip and let the lawyer in the cheap blue suit do that for him.
