Excerpt: His contemplation was interrupted by a sound that Sebastian knew quite well. His ears twitched and he found the creator of the small sound-- a little kitten, sopping wet, which was huddling in a nearby doorway and yowling plaintively at anyone who passed by in hopes of succor.

Sebastian had a list of things to do on his day off, because a day off wasn't really a day off at all. He'd noticed that pretty quickly. He had to go into town and poke around the marketplace unobtrusively, interview a new servant who could only come to town on this particular day (whom he would surely hire if she displaced any evidence of competence), and he had to do a few demon things that he didn't like to share with Ciel or the general populace.

Still, it was relaxing to be out from under the eye of the grumpy boy, and his heart was light as he strode down the street. The passersby who met his smile went away discomfited by the fact that his teeth seemed to gleam, oddly sharp, and the fact that he was smiling at all, with his hair plastered to his face by the rain.

For the sort of personal issues he wanted to address today, the rain was perfect, and the fog threatening was even better. It was all according to plan. He'd meet the servant in ten minutes at the pub, and then he had some time for a leisurely lunch.

His contemplation was interrupted by a sound that Sebastian knew quite well. His ears twitched and he found the creator of the small sound-- a little kitten, sopping wet, which was huddling in a nearby doorway and yowling plaintively at anyone who passed by in hopes of succor.

At least, that's what Sebastian assumed. He picked it up at once and tucked it into his coat, and after a moment's disorientation the cat began to purr and knead at his chest with tiny needle-like claws. He petted it absently as he stepped into the dark pub, hoping it would remain quiet enough that they wouldn't have to conduct their business in the rain.

He didn't consider putting it out instead, if it became a problem. That wasn't the sort of demon Sebastian was. This was his day off, and he would enjoy it much more with the cat at his side. Or against his chest, as it were.

A woman waved from a table along the back wall. Apparently his description had been sufficient. He made his way over and sat down across from her, dripping onto the floor in a somewhat undignified manner. Ciel would have scolded him for forgetting an umbrella.

"Marty," she said, smiling and pushing her glasses up on her nose. "Martha, really, but everyone calls me Marty. I heard you were looking for a housemaid."

"Ah, yes," Sebastian said, his tone dry even if his clothing wasn't. "Our current housemaid is in need of some help..."

The interview went quite well; Marty had glowing references. He was ready to shake her hand and seal the deal when the warm kitten in his lap made a small noise of contentment. He'd half-forgotten it was there and looked down, surprised, before relaxing into a smile.

Marty blinked. "Is that a cat?"

"I found him outside," Sebastian said, lifting the animal gently so that Marty could see the yawning kitten face. Her mouth set in a hard line when the cat's ear twitched.

"Dirty things," she said. "Cats. Always cleaning themselves and getting into the cupboards. Can't stand them."

"I see," Sebastian said, returning the cat to his lap. There was a moment of awkward silence that Marty broke, finally.

"So...?"

"We'll give you a call if we need you," Sebastian said coldly, rising from his seat. He was still somewhat damp and wouldn't have minded the heat for a little longer, but he had other considerations today.

"I must be off," he said, turning away and striding towards the door. She watched him go, flabbergasted. She wasn't sure what she had done to lose this job, but she could tell from his demeanor that she had.

Sebastian gave the kitten to a little girl on the street, who was more than thrilled to receive the present. He petted it one last time before he made his way purposefully in the direction of the market.

The rain had stopped, but the weak sun was insufficient in its drying powers. Still, Sebastian felt the kitten's warmth all the way back to the Phantomhive Manor, and he was smiling when he came in.

Meanwhile, my comments suck.

Of course it's cute. Sebastian thinks so.
