Excerpt: "As long as your child liked to solve puzzles... and what progeny of Professor Layton wouldn't want to do that?"
Like any engaged couple, their thoughts eventually turned around to children. It was only to be expected, both due to the time period and their situation.
"I think I would like a girl," Claire said, first, and Layton only nodded, struck for a moment with a vision of his bride-to-be in flowing white, her belly round, her countenance kind. Then he laughed internally. Sure, she would be kind, and happy, but he suspected she'd be in the lab until the day her water broke. She was as devoted to her profession as he was to puzzles, and he had always admired her for that.
"I would be happy either way," he spoke, honestly, and she leaned forward and ruffled his hair, blushing a little with the new intimacy. He reached out and grabbed her fingers, holding them gently in his.
"Of course you would," she said, giggling. "As long as your child liked to solve puzzles... and what progeny of Professor Layton wouldn't want to do that?"
"I'm not a professor yet," he mumbled, his face aflame from her compliments, and she just smiled. He knew she believed in him and his goal; she didn't have to say it often. Just an occasional word like this was enough.
"In time, in time," she said airily, smiling. He smiled back. She was right. They had the future ahead to think of such things.
"So," he said then, "have you heard this puzzle? There was a farmer, and he had three chickens..."
And so the conversation drifted on to other things.
