House doesn't have much luck with fellows, family, or friends. He knows why-- he knows he doesn't earn loyalty or give enough or make any sort of effort, really.

People pass through his life, the only constant his parents, to whom he is a (constant) disappointment. Disappointment is understandable-- he doesn't give enough, right? In any case, soon they will die, and then he can really be alone, without expectations.

And then again, there's Wilson. Sometimes he throws him a bone an doesn't think about why-- it's because he's bored or the act is convenient or a thousand other reasons, they don't matter. It's not because he needs someone-- he doesn't have anything to give except the pain and the breaking, the sarcasm and the limp. He hasn't figured out what Wilson gets out of this, beyond a challenge.

The fellows come and go. His father dies, so there's one concern down. And Wilson leaves.

He comes back.

Until he can figure out why, House tries to keep him around. Tries just a little, because he wants to solve the riddle. Logic is his god and he worships it constantly. This must come back to logic. Everything does.

Wilson smiles. House grunts. Time passes. And by the time House notices his apathy bleeding away, it's too late to save it.

He hopes that no one notices.
