Excerpt: Theirs was the most beautiful courtship since Shakespeare wrote his sonnets. Odes were penned to Megara's bright eyes, and Megara sketched Violet so many times she had memorized every whorl of her fingertips.

They were the best at telling stories. Violet could write fanciful tales with unicorns and princes, superheroes and villains, turning each cliche on its head and shining through them, revealing the kernels of truth. Meg drew pictures that seemed to jump off the paper, struggling to come to life and soar away.

Theirs was the most beautiful courtship since Shakespeare wrote his sonnets. Odes were penned to Megara's bright eyes, and Megara sketched Violet so many times she had memorized every whorl of her fingertips. She knew about the small scar on Violet's left hip, remnant of a childhood accident; Violet drowned in Meg's family history, history of failed relationships, history of self.

They knew each other as only artists could know each other; they loved each other as only poets do. And they loved as people, foxfire in their fingertips and the space between breaths and the mess one doesn't describe in words, the essence of pure life.

It was a story for the ages, an explosive breakup, and dark themes in their work for a while afterward. But every piece after that had bits of the other in it. After all, you never forget your first.
