Firm on Her Feet (Nala/Ariel)
Title: Firm on Her Feet
Length: 292 words
Fandom: The Lion King/The Little Mermaid: college students AU (Disney Hall)
Pairing/characters: Nala/Ariel; past Simba/Nala implied
Rating: G
Warnings: breakup fic
Prompt/challenge you're answering: no_true_pair: Nala/Ariel: don't cry now babydoll / nothing too good ever lasted long
Excerpt: As it turned out, her comforting skills were invaluable when dealing with her roommate. Ariel was somewhat naive, despite being from California, and she was pretty. That meant a lot of broken hearts.
Nala was an expert at comforting others. She'd learned it at an early age and was even somewhat famous in her town for coaxing her ex-boyfriend back into the family business. Now he ran Pridelands Company.
She went to college. A girl with her brains couldn't be cooped up in that small town desert to wither away.
As it turned out, her comforting skills were invaluable when dealing with her roommate. Ariel was somewhat naive, despite being from California, and she was pretty. That meant a lot of broken hearts.
"Don't worry about it, your perfect person will come along," Nala always said, Ariel's head in her lap as she sobbed. She ran her hands through the redhead's locks and wondered when she'd been so innocent. It was like a forcefield Ariel carried around with her-- she advertised vulnerability.
Nala was strong, independent, fierce. She went Dutch with her boyfriends and argued over football. She was opposite of Ariel in every way. And sometimes she envied her. It was hard work to be so strong all of the time.
Perhaps it was inevitable, then, that their differing qualities led to admiration and infatuation. After the fourth bad break-up in a year, while Nala was wiping at her tears, Ariel leaned forward and kissed her.
And that had been wonderful for a while. But the differences between them led to gaps in communication, and arguments, and their desire for each other bled away.
"Your perfect person will come along," Nala said as Ariel wept, even though she wanted to cry too.
Maybe the redhead had learned a little, because she said, "Yours will, too," before she walked away.
And Nala knew that, but it was nice to hear, anyway.
