They spent four years as roommates, and three-and-a-half of those as lovers. Megara knew the shape of Jasmine's head beside her on the pillow, the taste of her skin, the way she liked to be kissed on her neck. The two of them kept a routine-- Sunday afternoon cuddling, Thursday afternoon makeouts, Tuesday lunches. Friends, teachers, and classes didn't interrupt them.

And now they were going-- Jasmine, back to Quebec, where she had come from, and Megara, back to California. Chance had brought them together to this Northeastern college town, and graduation was breaking them apart.

They hadn't discussed it, somehow-- what would happen when their degrees were done and it was time for life to begin. They hadn't discussed it, and now it was too late.

They didn't want to break up, but more importantly, how could they stand to wake up apart from each other?

For the least few days of term, they broke their comfortable routine. Jasmine stayed in their dorm room, sleeping mostly, as though she was trying to sink the atmosphere into her skin. The two single beds pushed together in the middle of the room felt very lonely without Megara to bridge the gap.

Megara spent as little time as possible there, stalking across the campus and talking on her cell phone. No one had answers for her-- not her sister, not her best friend from high school, not the friends that she and Jasmine shared.

Go after her, some suggested. Make her come with you, others said. Meg was pulling her hair out in frustration. She walked across campus, watching the trees bloom and hating life.

When it grew late, Meg stalked back to bed and lay on the edge of it, as far away from Jasmine as possible.

The last day they had to spend together, Meg awoke with Jasmine's arms around her, and she nearly wept at the touch she'd missed.

"Why don't you go home and get an apartment?" Jasmine whipsered in Megara's ear, still clutching her tightly. "I'll go explain to my parents that I am desperately in love, and in the summer, I will come to you."

"I don't want to make you leave your family," Meg said, screwing her eyes shut as Jasmine lifted her hair and kissed the back of her neck.

"It's the first day of the rest of our lives," Jasmine replied. "I intend to spend mine with you."

Megara shifted around to face Jasmine, and kissed her gently.

"The summer?" she said. Jasmine smiled.

"And in the winter, I will take you home to meet my parents. They only speak French and my mother will want to style your hair. And next spring..."

"We'll buy a new couch," Megara said, "and break it in thoroughly on Thursday evenings."

"And Fridays, and Saturdays, and Sundays..." Jasmine said, her fingers soft along Megara's jaw, and they both looked forward to the future.
