Excerpt: "I told my dad," Jasmine said, grabbing Belle's delicate hand, "about us." She squeezed suddenly and painfully, but Belle didn't move to extract herself.
They had already made love and Belle was drifting off into sleep when Jasmine said, "I told him."
Her voice was flat and somewhat harsh, so Belle shrugged off her sleepiness, lifting a hand to trace her lover's face in the dark.
"Told who, what?" she asked, because she wasn't a mind-reader, really.
"I told my dad," Jasmine said, grabbing Belle's delicate hand, "about us." She squeezed suddenly and painfully, but Belle didn't move to extract herself.
"You did?"
Belle sat up enough to reach the bedside light, and when she switched it on, she saw Jasmine, her back curled like a comma, her eyes vulnerable. She looked away when the light came off, wiping hurriedly at a tear.
"Yeah, I did," she said, and though she was upset, there was a determined curve to her jaw that Belle recognized, and loved. She hadn't given in to her father's wish that she return to Agrabah to complete her degree, Belle was sure.
"What did he say?"
"He's disowning me," Jasmine said, a breath against Belle's collarbone, and Belle's eyes widened in shock.
"What?"
Jasmine snuggled closer to her girlfriend, pressing her face between Belle's slight breasts. Her voice was muffled when she replied.
"He's disowning me. My cousin is going to be king."
"Are you... are you okay with that, Jazz?"
Jasmine didn't reply for a long moment. She sucked gently at Belle's neck-- which wasn't an unpleasant thing, not by a long shot-- but it didn't distract the other girl.
"Jazz?" she repeated, a bit out of breath, and Jasmine sighed.
"It's for the best, really," she said, pausing her kisses. "He's always wanted to be king. Daddy did it for me, really. He's not mad at me, not too much. But I can't go back to Agrabah as a... as a lesbian. It's not done there."
Belle wrapped her arms around Jasmine, holding her tighter, her eyes creased with worry.
"What are you going to do?" she asked.
Delicately, Jasmine extracted herself from Belle's grip in order to look into her eyes. She tilted her head to one side and replied, "I'll stay with you, of course. It's all that I want to do."
"But your life--"
"It's here," she said, kissing Belle gently on the lips. "With the bookish American girl who stole my heart. Now, let's go to sleep."
"If you're sure?" Belle said, and Jasmine laughed.
"I don't need a kingdom to be happy," she replied. "There's more to life than that."
Belle agreed, turning off the light again, and she listened as Jasmine's breath slowed and she fell aslep, before going to sleep herself.
