Even as he carefully crafted the little pink staff, Clow knew there would be another challenger. He kept good track of his descendants, especially the ones who would be on the cusp of the turning point.

He knew the boy would have the Li sword, just as he had held the Li sword once (not for very long, since he was, after all, a half-breed). And he would know the Chinese magic, which would give him a little bit of an advantage on sweet Sakura.

But he knew Sakura would succeed, and he looked at the futures ahead, the sheaves of cards, the way the world could move forward, and he wondered what he could do for his descendant. The boy was too solemn-- a Li through and through. He would not take to losing well. And he would lose.

But maybe.... Clow thought, squinting into the darkness, maybe there is something for him. He is family, after all.

There would be Yue's other self, and there would be Touya, who was not quite right to wield the cards, though he would have powers passed from Fujitaka. There were many, many variables.

One day Clow woke with the vision of small hands covering Sakura's on the staff, of determination and power. He knew one couldn't predict love, not really, it is the most free will any human being had.

But he felt a little better about Li Syaoran after that.
