He had to be drunk, he was seeing Clow. Watanuki blinked blearily at the apparition, who handed him his glasses.
"Not the best idea, I should think," a British voice said cheerfully as he replaced them on his face, and the owner of the voice swam into view.
He looked just like Clow-- dark hair, round glasses, a ponytail. Yuuko didn't have many pictures of the magician, but this matched him absolutely.
"You have enough trouble when you're not intoxicated, in fact, if the things that Yuuko tells me are true."
"Aren't you dead?" Watanuki managed to ask flatly. The man laughed, playing a hand on Watanuki's shoulder in a familiar sort of way.
"I take it you know about Clow, then? He and I aren't the same person, though we once were. It's a touch complicated, has little bearing on your situation. Can I help you home?"
"Yuuko-san..." Watanuki mumbled, his sense of duty somehow still intact. Not-Clow shrugged.
"She's an adult woman, she'll be all right. But I don't think your protector is here tonight, is he?"
"No," Watanuki admitted sullenly, wanting to blow up at the thought of Doumeki as his "protector," but it was somehow much easily to admit the fact to a stranger than it would have been to admit to the stone-faced archer himself. A good fit would have, in any case, required more coordination than Watanuki had at the moment.
"Ah, but he's waiting for you, I See that," the man said, his glasses flashing suddenly in the dark. He smiled, and it was the smile Clow wore in all of his photographs, and Watanuki wanted to ask what his name was, but it was clear from his earlier explanation that the man expected that he knew already.
"I have enough of Clow's power left for that. I'll help you to the gate then," he said, offering his arm gallantly. Feeling somewhat pressured, Watanuki took it, and was led to the fence. Sure enough, Doumeki was there, leaning against a pole and looking irritable, as usual.
"You drank too much," he said, and Watanuki grumbled.
"Best of luck," the magician called cheerfully, already fading back into the party, and Watanuki spent no more time wondering about him. He was much too concerned with the fact that the contents of his stomach were coming back up in a messy way.
When he was done puking, Doumeki took him by the collar and dragged him home, waiting for Watanuki to unlock the door and watching him find his clothes and lay out the futon. The sheets were wonderfully cool and Watanuki relaxed for just a moment before Doumeki climbed into bed beside him. His entire body stiffened.
"I don't want to fight," Doumeki mumbled, kissing his shoulder, and then went to sleep. After a moment, Watanuki did too, already regretting the hangover he'd have in the morning.
But at least Clow had helped him make it home.
