Excerpt: "Suppi!" Nakuru said bouyantly. Spinel twitched an ear and said nothing. "Let's make white chocolate before Eriol and Kaho come home."

Spinelsun liked Valentine's Day, but he kept that quiet. Very quiet. After all, it wasn't as though he enjoyed the traditional candy or he had a girl to spend the day with. He just... liked the feeling of it.

In the morning Eriol always made pancakes and there were trinkets for them on the table, even though Valentine's Day was for girls and it really should be Nakuru stepping up, since she seemed to consider herself female lately. Spinelsun received a hand-made bookmark and sugarless chocolate.

On Valentine's Day, Eriol got up early to walk to school with Kaho. As a staff member, she was required to be there pretty early, and they were usually all still asleep when she left. But this morning they were out the door, hand in hand, and Spinelsun smiled a little. She was a nice girl. Quiet, too, which was more than he could say about his counterpart.

"Suppi!" Nakuru said bouyantly. Spinel twitched an ear and said nothing. "Let's make white chocolate before Eriol and Kaho come home."

White chocolate was much more difficult to make than traditional chocolate, and the ingredients were hard to find here, but somehow Nakuru managed to whip something together before she had to leave for school.

"Don't eat it all!" she cautioned cheerfully when she went out the door. Spinel lifted his nose. As if that would happen.

He floated back into the kitchen and sat down on the counter next to the pot. Carefully he stirred the chocolate. White chocolate was tempermental. It needed a gentle touch and a lot of special care.

When it was done, he transformed himself into his large form and carefully pulled the pan off of the stove. This was the most difficult part, getting the chocolate into molds designed for someone with fingers and not paws.

Nakuru picked her shape out earlier, a simple heart. He did three whorls, like fine seashells, from a mold he kept safely hidden in the back of the cabinet. This was a good year and he was able to pour with a minimum of spilling, and then transform into his small self for final adjustments. He lay the chocolate out to dry, smiling with satisfaction.

Eriol and Kaho wouldn't be home until late that night, he knew. He spent the time waiting for Nakuru by taking a nap and then wrapping up his chocolate and placing two pieces by Eriol and Kaho's bed. He left the third seashell out for Nakuru. Somehow he'd accidentally made three pieces, might as well give the extra to her, he told her every year. (She saw right through his curmudgeonly act, but any attempt to get him to admit it was in vain.)

He curled up on top of a cabinet, smiling to himself in satisfaction. There weren't many gifts that a cat creature could produce for his creator, but chocolate was certainly one of them. He nibbled a bit on his sugarless chocolate and rested his head on his paws.

He wasn't exactly sure what he liked about Valentine's Day since he didn't indulge in the traditional activities. Perhaps it was just the love in the air. It made him feel content.

Spinelsun shut his eyes for a long moment, and let the spirit of the holiday touch his dreams.
