Excerpt: Nakuru beamed. "I'm going by Nicky this time around!" he said. "Trying something new! What do you think?"
"To-ya!" someone shouted through the crowd in the bar. Touya squinted in the dimness and looked out through the crush of people. He saw no one, and was about to return to his beer when someone wrapped their arms around him firmly.
"To-ya!" Nakuru said, hugging him happily. Most of the other regular patrons stared. They'd known Touya and Yukito together for years. The only reason Yukito wasn't there tonight was that he was sick, and there had already been several jokes about when Touya had to go home to his "sick wife." (Soon, Touya knew, but he just wanted to wind down a little after work.)
"I'm back in Japan for a while, isn't it wonderful?" Nakuru said while Touya attempted to extract himself from the guardian. He looked Nakuru up and down, seeing how the decade had affected Nakuru. Not much, though there was something subtly different.
Nakuru beamed. "I'm going by Nicky this time around!" he said. "Trying something new! What do you think?"
Ah, that was it. No skirt. Touya smiled weakly.
"My... cousin Nicky," he said to the bar. Clearly the patrons weren't buying it, their eyebrows collectively lifted in disbelief. Touya dragged his old friend out the door to talk.
