Excerpt: The next day she knocked at Chitose's door and she let her in, no question. They talked and laughed and Chiharu remembered how to dream happily and Chitose's smile made her smile too.
It was lonely in the apartment, but Chiharu didn't notice. She brought her lonely with her, anyway. Ever since Yamazaki had gone away, her days were white, grey, even black and white sometimes. Not fun. Not crazy. Yamazaki was gone and he'd just left Chiharu with lonely, with broken promises.
Damn him, she thought sometimes at night, and sometimes she didn't sleep until the morning. She had nothing else to do with the grey.
One Friday night the landlord invited her in for tea and for some reason or another they stayed awake until one in the morning and Chiharu cried a lot. Miss Hibuya-- or Chitose, as she corrected gently-- understood her. She knew how it was to lose someone. Her husband was dead. At least Yamazaki was alive somewhere.
She went back to her apartment at one and she slept that night without dreaming. The next day she knocked at Chitose's door and she let her in, no question. They talked and laughed and Chiharu remembered how to dream happily and Chitose's smile made her smile too.
The days passed and months passed and Chiharu was in love again and it was too easy. She felt guilty. She said nothing to Chitose. Chitose was much older than her, after all. She probably wouldn't feel the same.
Chiharu had been in love with Chitose for six months when Chitose got a boyfriend. Her apartment was right next door and Chiharu could hear the bedsprings creak and she cried.
