Title: Ginger
Day/Theme: Oct 20 // gingerbread

Character/Pairing: Watanuki and Yuuko gen

Excerpt: "Why?" he replied, taking the bait (he always did, he couldn't help it, he would forever be her straight man).
"I don't think I'd like to go to Germany," Yuuko said, her mouth in a tight line, and Watanuki thought she was joking until he saw her odd expression.
"Why?" he replied, taking the bait (he always did, he couldn't help it, he would forever be her straight man).
"It's all in this book," she said, pointing down at the slim volume that she'd been buried in for the past hour (Watanuki had been taking the opportunity to clean in peace, and even to hum a little while he was doing it).
Watanuki leaned down and looked at the cover of the book. "Pfefferkuchen," it said, as far as he could tell from sounding it out in his limited English. German, he thought, but the picture was of a gingerbread house, decorated like an old German cottage. He lifted his eyebrows at Yuuko.
How did she know German anyway?
"Hexenhaeusle," she said empathically. "Witches' houses! Out of gingerbread!"
"Doesn't seem very practical," Watanuki admitted. Not practical, but not particularly offensive.
"And they throw them into fires!" she concluded, jabbing her finger at the story as though he could read it.
"The houses?"
"The witches," she said, rolling her eyes.
He opened his mouth to say, "I think it's fiction," but she'd gone back to reading, a frown creasing her forehead.
And she was quiet, so he shrugged and went back to cleaning, humming as he went.
